A. Gordon Meyer, 82, of New Smyrna Beach, a physical education teacher at Read-Pattillo Elementary School, New Smyrna Beach, for 22 years before his retirement, died Monday, February 11, 2013. Mr. Meyer was born in Ontonagon, MI and moved to New Smyrna Beach in 1962 from Orlando. He was a U.S. Air Force veteran of the Korean Conflict during which time he trained at the Kodo Khan in Tokyo to teach martial arts to Rangers and Seals. He was a 1958 graduate of the University of Florida, Gainesville, receiving a bachelor's degree in education. Mr. Meyer also taught physical education at several elementary schools in Orlando and was a State Farm Insurance agent in Orlando and Farm Bureau agent in New Smyrna Beach. An avid golfer, winning many tournaments, he was a member of the Men's Golf Association at New Smyrna Beach Municipal Golf Course. Survivors include his wife of 57 years, June; son, Russell (Renee) of Palm City; daughter, Laura (Thomas) Grace of Lexington Park, MD; grandson, Kevin Grace also of Lexington Park; brother, John (Nancy) of Hilton Head, SC; and nephew Robert also of Hilton Head. Memorial service will be 2PM Sunday, February 24, 2013 at the Halifax Health Hospice of Volusia/Flagler Southeast Care Center, 4140 S. Ridgewood Ave., Edgewater. Cremation will be by Dudley Crematory, New Smyrna Beach. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the or the Hospice Southeast Care Center.
