Memorial service for Frank H. Backes who passed away Saturday, March 23, 2013 at SE Volusia Care Center will be held 2:00 p.m. Saturday, April 6th at St. Peter the Fisherman Episcopal Church, New Smyrna Beach, with The Reverend Jim Spencer officiating. Mr. Backes was born in Winchester, MA to the late Edward and Evelyn Graner Backes and moved to Edgewater in 1995 from Waukegan, IL. He was a U.S. Army veteran serving during World War II. Mr. Backes was a member of St. Peter the Fisherman Episcopal Church where he enjoyed singing in the choir, Florida Native Plant Society, past president of the New Smyrna Beach Lions Club, and a former member of Artist Workshop and the Camera Club. He enjoyed reading, photography, camping, hiking, and was a big Chicago Cubs fan. Survivors include his wife of 60 years, Dorothy; four sons, James of Charlottesville, VA, Thomas and his wife Lynn of Pace, FL, Stephen and his wife Debbie of Valrico, FL, Benjamin of St. Petersburg, FL; brother, William and his wife Theresa; sister, Elizabeth Runyan and her husband Jess; five grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. In lieu of flowers memorial donations may be made to Halifax Health Hospice of Volusia/Flagler, Attn: Edgewater Care Center, 3800 Woodbriar Trail, Port Orange, FL 32129 or Florida Lions Conklin Center for the Blind, 405 White St., Daytona Beach, FL 32114.
