Augustus "Gus" Collier Jr., 77, died at Duke University Hospital on Tuesday, April 2, 2013 at 4:10 p.m. in Durham, North Carolina. Augustus was born, May 12, 1935 in Madison, Georgia, to Elmira and Augustus Collier, Sr. He was educated in the Volusia County School System. Augustus was married to Ruby Robinson on October 20, 2001 in Ormond Beach, Florida. He lived in: Ormond Beach, Florida, Columbia, Alabama, and Durham, North Carolina. He worked at Ormond Beach Elementary School for more than 30 years, where he retired. He was dearly loved by all school stakeholders, where he was affectionately called, "Mr. Gus" by the students. Augustus will be especially remembered for his sociable nature and love of cooking, fishing, gardening, and working with his hands. He also loved to mentor young men in his community of Durham County. He provided counseling services to young officers of the Durham County Sherriff's Department. Survivors include his children, Gregory F. Collier (Laura), Killeen, Texas, Patricia Bloodworth-Johnson, Miami, Florida, and Augustus Collier III (Marian), Durham, North Carolina. Augustus leaves behind eight grandchildren, Jeane, Jenna, Andrea, Alejandra, Jessica, Jazmin, Aulani, and Augustus; and one great-grandson, Deriyn. His siblings include, Benjamin (Judy), Walter, Mildred, Elnora, and Virginia. He was preceded in death by one brother, John, and three sisters, Cornelia, Deborah, and Lora. He leaves behind to cherish his memories numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.
Services will be held at Emmanuel Church of the Living God at 1:00 p.m. on Thursday, April 11, 2013, located at 54 S. Ridgewood Avenue Ormond Beach, Florida 32174. A Wake will be held Wednesday, April 10 from 4:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. at Herbert Thompson Funeral Home, 901 Dr. Mary McLeod Bethune Blvd., Daytona Beach, FL 32114. The Funeral will be held on Thursday, April 11, 2013 at 1:00 p.m. at the aforementioned church.
