First Sergeant Wilbert Thomas Kies, Jr., 59, of DeLand, passed away June 27, 2013 at the Halifax Health Hospice of Volusia / Flagler Care Center in Orange City. He was born in New Jersey on April 24, 1954 and came to Orlando in 1955. Wilbert was a graduate of Colonial High School in Orlando and received his Bachelor's degree from Columbia University. He retired from the U.S. Army after 21 years of service in 1996. He moved to DeLand in 1998 from Jacksonville, Alabama. Wilbert enjoyed working on Mustang cars and collecting antiques. He loved his cocker spaniel dogs. Survivors include his wife of 39 years, Jackie; his parents Wilbert T. and Jean Kies, Sr. of Deltona; son Wilbert T. Kies, III of DeLand; daughters Samantha Milewicz of Newburgh, Indiana and LaVerda Augustine of DeLand; sisters Diane Albright of Valrico and Elaine Klonel of Lake Mary; and grandchildren Torin Kies, Sarah Milewicz, Emma Milewicz, Kirsten Milewicz and Grace Milewicz. The family will be receiving friends on Thursday, July 4th from 11am-2pm at his home, 632 Lake Drive in DeLand. Interment with full military honors will be held on Tuesday, July 9th at 11:30am at Florida National Cemetery in Bushnell. Online condolences may be made at www.allensummerhillfuneralhome.com.
