Marjorie Lilian Varn Leonard - 7/31/1929 - 9/17/2013, 84, passed away September 17, 2013 while in Hospice Care at Florida Memorial Hospital in Daytona Beach. She was born to Claude Grady Varn and Marjorie Boor Varn in Butte, Montana, where her native Floridian family was residing while her father operated the Coca-Cola bottling plant as co-owner. Following the death of her mother during childbirth, the family moved back to Florida. Claude Varn later married Mary Belle Barber of Bunnell who adopted and raised the children with love and tenderness. Marjorie graduated from Ketterlinus High School in 1947. While in high school, she received the title of "Miss St. Augustine". She attended the University of Florida, the first year they admitted women and joined the Delta Delta Delta Sorority while there. Prior to graduation she moved to Washington, D.C. to attend George Washington University. While in Washington, she accepted a job with the government as an operative with the Central Intelligence Agency which took her to Vienna, Austria and Berlin, Germany immediately after World War II. In 1957 Marjorie married James Dwight Leonard (KHS 1943) of St. Augustine in Trinity Episcopal Parish. They moved to Manhattan, New York City. She and Jim and their two daughters lived in New Jersey, Louisiana and Florida. Marjorie and Jim fulfilled their desire to return to St. Augustine in 1996. Marjorie was a devoted, loving and fun wife and mother. She loved the company of her family and her friends and her heart was always in St. Augustine. Marjorie is survived by her daughters: Elizabeth "Lyza" Leonard Winston and son-in-law, Wayne of Illinois and Marjorie "Jori" Leonard Snell and son-in-law, Gregory, and granddaughters, Maris and Arden Snell of Ormond Beach; sisters: Mrs. Marilyn Varn Colee King (BHS 1941) of Bunnell and her family, and Mrs. Helen "Honey" Varn Holton (KHS 1944) of Flagler Beach and her family, and the family of her brother, Wilfred Varn of Tallahassee; Jim's family: nephew, Sterling Hart (KHS 1958) and June (KHS 1959) Hart of St. Augustine and their family, Mrs. Caryl Leonard (Mrs. John "Jack", KHS 1939), of Mystic, CT and her family, and the Walter "Duke" Leonard (KHS 1939) family. Marjorie was predeceased by her husband, Jim, of 47 years, her parents, Claude Varn, Marjorie Varn and Mary Belle Varn; and a sister Corise "Tossie" Patricia Varn (BHS 1938); a brother, Wilfred Claude Varn. A Memorial Service will be held at 2:00 p.m. Saturday, October 19, 2013 at Trinity Episcopal Parish, 215 St. George Street, St. Augustine, FL. Private inurnment services will be in Evergreen Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, contributions in Marjorie's memory may be made to a preferred charity.
