Athanase "Al" F. Parsons-My father, Athanase "Al" F. Parsons, 84, was born on December 18, 1928 in Brussels, Belgium. As an 8 month old, he came to the states with his mother, Elise where his father, Costa was eagerly awaiting their arrival. They settled in New Jersey, but moved to Daytona Beach for warmer weather. As a seventeen year old, Al joined the marines where he was a part of Charlie Company and was stationed in China between 1946-1948. He was a recipient of the Purple Heart for a wound received near Hsin Ho on April 5, 1947. Upon getting out of the service, he settled in New Jersey and took up the electrician trade, where he has been a 50 year member of IBEW Local Union 102. In January of 1994, retirement brought him to Daytona Beach. Al was a member of Moose Lodge # 2516, and VFW Lodge # 3282. The best thing my father liked most was traveling. Some of his travels included Australia, China, Japan, Panamal Canal, Europe to name a few, plus all over the states. He was a member of the China Marine Association where he received a plaque in September for attending 25 out of 25 reunions. His siblings have said that he loved the Marines now, but not so much when he was serving. Not that long ago, he started having health issues where he couldn't get up and go when he wanted to, and this was really difficult for him to take. After 9 days at the hospital and hospice , he took his final trip and he was in the "driver's seat" until the end. All his kindness to all and stories will be missed greatly. I love you, Dad! Special thanks to Dr. Alsea Lacierda, and all the wonderful folks at Hospice. Al is predeceased by his wife, Esther B. Parsons, and is survived by daughter, Marie E. Bennett, and husband Charlie, of Burleson, Texas; stepson Ernest Sheppard, and his wife Ruth of Itasca, Texas; brother, Paul Parsons and wife, Linda of Daytona Beach; sisters Theresa Tedrow, Orlando; Francis Sage and her husband, Deryl of Lynnhaven, Florida; and grandson Cayce. A celebration of his life will be held 6:00 pm Sunday, November 3rd in the Chapel of Pinello Funeral Home, 1036 Derbyshire Road, Daytona Beach with the Reverend Mark Spivey officiating. The family will receive friends from 4:00pm until service time. Interment with military honors will take place at 2:00 pm Monday in the Florida National Cemetery, Bushnell, Florida.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Halifax Hospice of Volusia/Flagler. Services entrusted to Pinello Funeral Home: 386-252-7777
