Funeral Services for Deacon George Lee Houston, 81, who went home to be with the Lord on Wednesday, January 22, 2014, will be 11 AM, Tuesday, January 28, 2014 at Greater Friendship Missionary Baptist Church, Rev. Dr. L. Ronald Durham, officiating. Interment will follow in Greenwood Cemetery. Calling hours are from 5-7 PM, today, (Mon., Jan. 27) at Greater Friendship MBC and from 9:30 AM until service time at the church on Tuesday. Deacon Houston was born to the late David and Mattie Houston, Sr. in Blountstown, Florida. He was educated in Calhoun County Schools. He was a veteran of the United States Army and served in the Korean Conflict. He was a member of the Greater Friendship MBC where he served faithfully as a deacon for over 46 years, worked as Transportation Ministry President, Baptist Training Union Director, Trail Explorers Counselor, Sunday School Teacher, Finance Assistant and sang in the Male Chorus. Deacon Houston loved reading and studying the Bible, gardening, sports, car shows, family gatherings, mentoring children and spending time with his grandchildren. He retired from the Volusia County School District as Head Custodian at Mainland and Seabreeze High Schools. He also worked in the transportation department at Council on Aging and Bethune-Cookman University (College). He was predeceased by his brother, David Houston, Jr., his first wife, Drucilla Houston. Deacon Houston's memories will be most cherished by his loving wife, Deaconess Agnes; daughters, Annie Joyce Robinson, Panama City, Cherie "Jan" Houston; son, Leroy Houston, Sr. (Audrey) all of Daytona Bch; brother, Herbert Houston (Eileen), Longwood; aunt: Maggie Houston, Panama City, FL; sister-in-law; Rose Houston of Miami, FL; a host of loving grandchildren, great grandchildren, nieces and nephews whom he cherished and friends.
