Daniel James Cotter, of Deltona, passed away Thursday, July 10, 2014. He was 50. Danny was born to Rosemary and John H. Cotter in Salem, Mass., on July 25, 1963. He grew up in Swampscott, Montreal and Burlington, Vt., where he graduated high school. After graduating Dan joined the army. He was stationed in Germany before joining the Vermont National Guard, including a one-year deployment to Iraq. He proudly served his country in the military for more than 20 years. Danny attended Johnson State College in Vermont, where he worked as director of security and operations. Tired of the long winters, he then moved south to Florida, where he graduated from the University of Central Florida with a Bachelor of Arts in political science. A true gentle giant of a man, Danny was known for his warm sense of his humor, his loyalty to family and friends and his ability to calmly take control of situations simply by telling a joke and flashing a big smile. His joyful exclamations of "Ooh-Rah" and "Waka-waka" will always make people who knew him laugh. Dan is predeceased by his father, John. H. Cotter, and his step-father, Jimmy O'Neill. Danny is survived by his mother, Rosemary O'Neill; brother, John S. Cotter; sister, Susan Marshall and her husband, Dan; nephew, Corey Thacker; niece, Lisa Thacker and her son, Sebastian. He is also survived by step-siblings, Marybeth and Ward Cully; David O'Neill, James O'Neill and Cathy O'Neill. A memorial service celebrating Dan's life is to be held at 6 p.m., Wednesday, July 16, 2014, at Osteen United Methodist Church, 179 Carpenter Ave. A reception will follow in the social hall.
