James Johnston

James (Jim) Johnston

James Eugene Johnston passed away on Friday, November 16, 2012 in Atlanta, GA. He was born in Jefferson City, MO on February 2, 1935 and was raised in Springfield, MO. He was the son of Edith Tremaine Johnston and the late Eugene Johnston. He was a graduate of Southwest Missouri State University (now Missouri State University). He married Jean Jones of Mansfield, MO in 1957 and they had two daughters. He began his career as an accountant with Dayco but spent the majority of his career as a business executive and vice president with Bandag, Inc. He spent his "retirement" owning and operating a Kawasaki dealership in Springfield and a Dairy Queen franchise in Ava, MO. He also worked with Fisk Limousine Co. in Springfield. He enjoyed traveling and meeting people as a driver with Fisk. He was an avid St. Louis Cardinals fan and also loved sports and spending time with friends and family. Health problems in 2008 necessitated his move to Atlanta to live near his daughters. But he always said that Springfield was his home. He is survived by his mother Edith Johnston of Springfield, MO; his sister Joan Keiser and her husband Fritz of Springfield, MO; his brother Jerry Johnston of Nixa, MO; his daughters Cynthia Steinberg and her husband Howard of Alpharetta, GA, and Keren Hightower and her husband, Doug of Acworth, GA; several nieces and nephews; and two grandchildren John Steinberg and Halle Steinberg of Johns Creek, GA. During the last couple years his favorite things to do were to watch his grandchildren play sports, attend church services every week, and spend time with his daughters and their families. Visitation will be held on Wednesday, November 21, 2012 at 1:00 p.m., followed by funeral services at 2:00 in Gorman-Scharpf Brentwood Chapel. Burial will be at White Chapel Memorial Gardens. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorial contributions be made to either the Leukemia Society of America or to the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Institute in Seattle, WA.
