Judith Juanita Berry, 78, Springfield, passed away at 5:35 a.m., Sunday, October 7, 2012, in Cox Medical Center South. Judith Juanita Berry, better known to her friends as Juanita, was born on January 21, 1934 in Marionville, Missouri, the daughter of the late Virgil and Alice (Pendergrass) Carter. She moved to Springfield in 1944 and attended Pipkin Junior High, Springfield Senior High School and two years at SMS College followed by a long career with Lawson Gibbs Abstract Company. During high school she met Jim Berry which began a long-term relationship. Following Jim's graduation from college and a commission in the U.S. Navy, they reported to Miramar Naval Air Station in San Diego where Jim was a Naval Jet Fighter Pilot. She had two sons, Pat and Doug in San Diego and son Steve in Hawaii, the only pineapple in the family. Many times Juanita had to act as mom and dad during Jim's carrier cruises and keep the home fires burning. She was active in many events and organizations and served as the Officers Wives Club president and was selected for many T.V. interviews. She was active in the PTA and served as PTA president and was involved as a student teacher. She encountered many heart breaks when Jim's plane would go down in enemy territory, be rescued and end up in a military hospital in Thailand and would eventually return home. She was required to make a home in many places including Florida, Texas, California, Washington, Hawaii, Guam and Tennessee. After a 26 year career, Jim retired from the Navy and they returned to Springfield. She is survived by her husband, Jim; three sons, Patrick Berry and his wife Gina, Fort Lauderdale, FL; Doug Berry and his wife Teresa, Memphis, TN; and Steve Berry, Springfield; a sister, Dorothy Vantuyl and her husband Bill, Springfield; seven grandchildren, Gordon, Erika, Kristen, Zac, Nic, Taylorose and Jonathan; three great-grandchildren, Harrison, Houston and Hamilton; and many other relatives and friends. Funeral services will be held at 1:00 p.m., Friday, October 12, 2012 in J.D. Lee and Sons Funeral Home, Rogersville. Burial will follow in Missouri Veterans Cemetery, Springfield. Visitation will be held from 3 - 5:00 p.m., Thursday, October 11, 2012 in the funeral home. The family request memorial donations to the Disabled American Veterans, P.O.
