Olive Simmons Tiede
Olive Simmons Tiede went to be with her Lord and Savior on February 25, 2013. She was born on January 19, 1916, in Fayetteville, Arkansas, to William Day Simmons and Mary Lawrence (Duncan) Simmons. She was the youngest of eight children, all of whom preceded her in death. Her early childhood was spent in the St. Joseph, Missouri area. Subsequently, she moved with her parents to the Mt. Vernon area and graduated from Mt. Vernon High School in 1933, where she was a member of the women's basketball team. She received her teaching certificate from the State of Missouri in 1934. Her first teaching positions were at Spencer School, northeast of Mt. Vernon, and at Chesapeake. During the summers, she continued her education at what is now Missouri State University, completing two years at that time. On May 8, 1938, she married Ralph Watkinson Tiede at the Methodist Church in Mt. Vernon. In the early 1940's, in furtherance of the war effort, she and Ralph moved to Rochester, N.Y. After the war, they returned to Mt. Vernon, where Ralph opened a jewelry store. In 1950, they moved to a farm north of Marionville. After Ralph passed away in 1953, Olive returned to Missouri State and finished her B.S. in Education. She served as librarian at Jarrett Junior High School for the remainder of her teaching career until she retired in 1983.
As a widowed mother with five children, Olive was constantly busy, doing everything from sewing clothes, raising chickens, and gardening for sustenance. All of this was accomplished while finishing her college degree. With the help of friends and family, she raised all five children to go on and obtain college degrees. She was a big believer in hard work and education.
She is survived by her five children: Helen Tiede Henson of Billings; John William Tiede and his wife, Harleen, of Webb City; Virginia Ruth Nelson and her husband, Lamont, of Republic; Mary Margaret Hudson and her husband, Randy, of Billings; and Alice Elizabeth Cupps and her husband, David, of Cassville. She is also survived by 10 grandchildren: C. Kevin Henson, Brandon Henson, Angela Brown, Jason Tiede, Todd Nelson, Jacob Nelson, Marty Geren, Nathan Hudson, Sarah Reeves, and Jay Cupps. In addition, she is survived by 16 great-grandchildren.
