William "Bill" Alexander Johnson, 90, Springfield, Missouri, passed away on Monday, June 24, 2013, at Cox South. He was born on May 10, 1923, in Kansas City, Missouri, to William A. and Mary Helen Johnson. He was a graduate of Missouri Valley College where he met and married Grace Emmerson on October 30, 1944. Together they had two children.

During his lifetime, he served in the Navy, as an officer in WWII, worked for Travelers Insurance Co. for 37 years, and was a member of the Missouri Valley College football team inducted into the Missouri Sports Hall of Fame. When his health allowed, he was always up for a round of golf or enjoyed attending baseball games. He walked 18 holes of golf, 4 times a week, into his early 80s. He always enjoyed a good story or joke.

A very kind and gentle man, Bill valiantly faced multiple health challenges over the last few years of his life.

Bill is survived by his wife of 68 years (Grace); his children and their spouses, Hank (Sally) Johnson, Neosho, Missouri, and Karen (Gary) Whorton, Springfield, Missouri; his brother and his wife, Robert and Jean Johnson, Independence, Missouri; his grandchildren, Britt (Ryan) Hamilton, Lindsay Weiss, Ali Whorton, Brad (Tabitha) Johnson, and Lisa Johnson; five great-grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews.

The family would like to thank all who contributed to Bill's care in his last few years. A special thank you goes to OATS who greatly helped with Bill's transportation to dialysis.

A private graveside service will be held on July 2, at Missouri Veteran's Cemetery under the direction of Gorman-Scharpf Funeral Home.
