Charlene Benton

Charlene Vire Benton went home to be with her LORD on Thursday, August 30th, 2012 at the age of 81 after a three month battle with a lung infection.

Mama Charley as she was lovingly referred to by her family and friends had an infectious love of life and people that spilled over to everyone who knew her.

She was a woman of faith and lived by the philosophy that her Heavenly FATHER was in control in all situations.

Charley was born to Herschel and Jessie Vire in 1931 in Pleasant Hope, MO. On March 29, 1947 she married C. Ray Benton. Their 56 year marriage demonstrated unconditional love and devotion for one another. This union was blessed with one son R. Michael Benton and one daughter Tammy Benton Brewer.

Charley was a faithful member of St James Episcopal Church in Springfield for many years.

Charley worked up until her illness at Merrily We Quilt Along where she was known as Charley, the bosses pet! She was a quilter and created many beautiful projects with her hands as well as teaching many the art of quilting and knitting.

She was fun loving and full of life and loved nothing more than being escorted by her grandchildren to every Willie Nelson concert in the area.

Charley was preceded in death by her husband, C. Ray Benton and her parents Herschel and Jessie Vire. She is survived by her children R. Michael Benton and his wife Cindy and Tammy Brewer and her husband Larry.

She was Grandma Charley to five grandsons Bradley Benton and his fiancée Regan O'Rourke, Scott Brewer and his wife Karmen, Adam Benton, Steven Brewer and Toby Eidson and his wife Mairanne. She had one granddaughter, Blair Claxton and her husband Travis. She had eight great-grandchildren, Matthew Brewer, Gannon and Beau Benton, Grace O'Rourke, Connor and Jasper Claxton and Shane and Dallas Eidson.

She is also survived by her sister, Twyla Hefner and her husband Dooley. Two nieces, Lesa Haase and her husband John and Lori Inman and her husband Allen.

Services will be held Saturday, September 1st at 10:30am in St James Episcopal Church with burial following at Pleasant Hope Cemetery. Visitation will be Friday evening from 6:30 to 8:00 pm at Gorman-Scharpf Funeral Home.

Mama Charley, thank you for the legacy of love you have given each of us. You will live forever in our hearts.
