Doris Dean (Ewing) Cox, 84 of Springfield, passed away on Tuesday, April 23, 2013. She was born July 8th, 1928 in Wilson, Oklahoma to Scott and Cathelene Ewing. She was the second daughter, with older sister Elizabeth (Betty), and younger siblings Maxine and Faye. Her childhood was spent moving often thru the oil fields of Texas and Oklahoma as her father worked for the Ajax oil pipeline company. The family finally settled in Lebanon, MO where she attended high school. After graduating, she attended Southwest Missouri Teachers college for two years. While there, she met and later married John H. Cox on June 20th, 1948. She had three children; Theresa Ann, Jane Ellen, and John Lawrence. She returned to SMS 15 years later to earn her teaching degree. Doris was the first in her family to obtain a college degree.
She taught First Grade for 13 years at Mark Twain Elementary School in Springfield. As a young person, Doris was very active in sports, but her true passion was art. She loved to work in pastels and oils. Even though she was not able to pursue this area as a profession, she used her artistic talents to enrich the lives of the people at church and at Mark Twain Elementary school where she helped create bulletin boards and art projects for the children. She would also give her children access to art supplies so that we would stay occupied while she drew and painted.
Doris was always the teacher, replying to our questions with the comment, "let's look it up in the Encyclopedia!" She always amazed us with her wisdom, wit and sense of humor.
She and John both enjoyed early retirement from teaching. They spent many hours fishing, traveling, and enjoying visits with family. She was ever the advisor, counselor, and advocate for her children. She always saw a way to find a positive view to all that her life encountered.
In addition to her parents, Doris was preceded in death by two sisters, Elizabeth (Betty) Webb and Faye Smith.
She is survived by her husband, John H. Cox, sister Maxine Gehring; daughters Theresa Flory and husband Craig and Jane Cox Chrisman and husband Gene, and son John L. Cox.
