Dorothy Virginia Hill Kirkup, 97, was a Springfield Native and lived all her life in Springfield. She was united in marriage to the late John Vernon Kirkup. She was born July 29, 1915 and passed away January 16, 2013 at The Maples where she has resided for the last 7 years. Dorothy was the daughter of Bearl and Bessie Hill.
She was a longtime member of South Side Christian Church. She graduated from Central High School and attended SMS. Later she received a degree in cosmetology from the Classic Hair and Beauty School in Springfield.
Dorothy belonged to the following clubs and served as past officers: Pleiades, White Shrine, Queen City Chapter of the Eastern Star, Social Order of Beauceant.
Dorothy and Vernon Kirkup also belonged to the Frisco Square Dance Group and traveled all over the United States dancing.
Dorothy and her lifelong friend, Pearl Glen, volunteered for many years at Cox Hospital.
She is preceded in death by her husband, John Vernon Kirkup, daughter Julia Ann Kirkup Glen, and her only sister, Mary Elizabeth Masterson.
She is survived by her son, Thomas Vernon Kirkup of Rogersville, two grandchildren, Tony Kirkup of Springfield and Terri Kirkup Kowis of Carl Junction, three great grandchildren, Tim and Isaac Kowis and Tyler Kirkup and one niece Maribeth Robertson of Springfield.
There will be a graveside service only in Eastlawn Cemetery, 2244 E. Pythian, Springfield, MO at 11:00 A.M. on Saturday, January 19, 2012 under the direction of Klingner-Cope Family Funeral Home at Midtown.
Family has requested memorial donations be made in Dorothy's name to the
, 3322 S. Campbell, Springfield, MO 65807 in lieu of flowers.
