Jack Lee Sapp, age 80, died at home in Springfield, Missouri on Friday, April 5, 2013, following an extended illness.
Born on February 25, 1933, in Chicago, Illinois, he began his professional career in radio at WCRA in Effingham, Illinois immediately following high school. He served in the U.S. Army and was stationed in Salzburg, Austria.
He married Dalyne Tipsword and they had four children. He continued to work as a broadcaster for radio stations in Chicago, St. Louis, Cincinnati, and Miami, Florida, to name a few. During his career he worked with Jim Schulke and SRP Productions to develop the Easy Listening or Beautiful Music format which became very popular. Later in his career he hosted morning and afternoon shows on the Springfield, Missouri station KTXR - The Gentle Giant.
Survivors include his wife Martha Love, sister Janet Funneman, sons Greg, Brett (wife Janet) and Scott (wife Brenda), and daughter Tory (husband Roger), as well as 11 grandchildren, 3 great-grandchildren, 3 nephews, and 3 nieces. Jack was preceded in death by his mother Vina Marcott and stepfather Harold Marcott.
Jack was a life-long Chicago Cubs fan. During his retirement he enjoyed cooking, taking trips with his family, and watching movies. His quick wit and rich "radio" voice will be remembered by his friends and family.
The family would like to thank the staff of Phoenix Home Care and Omega Health Care who provided caring and compassionate home and hospice care, as well as Gorman-Scharpf Funeral Home.
Arrangements have been made through Johnson Funeral Home for a private graveside service to be held at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, April 20, 2013, at Oakridge Cemetery in Effingham, Illinois.
