Rex R. Barber

Rex R. Barber was born in St. Louis, Mo, May 21 1927, to Dewey and Leona (Gardner) Barber. He grew up in St. Louis. Leaving a job with Frisco Railroad, he joined the Navy at the height of WWII, at the age of 17, participating in the Philippine and Okinawa campaigns. He served again in the Korean Conflict.

After the war, he returned to his job with Frisco, where he met his wife, Marie Petzold. Later they moved to Springfield when the Frisco offices relocated there. He retired after 44 years in 1988.Retirement years were spent enjoying twelve grandsons, yard work, and perfecting baked goods for the Fair and special events. The family was always willing to taste-test award-winning pies and angel food cakes.

Rex was preceded in death by his parents, 2 brothers, and 2 sons. He is survived by his wife of 54 years, 2 daughters, a son, grandsons, and 2 great-grandchildren.

Visitation will be held Sunday, November 20, 2011 from 1-3pm in Klingner-Cope Family Funeral Home, 4500 S. Lone Pine, Springfield. Funeral services are scheduled for Monday, November 21, 2011 at 2:00pm in the Chapel.
