Obituary Condolences

Catherine Gail Rothman

Catherine Gail (O'Shea) Rothman was born in New York on July 21, 1943, to Venita and Edward O'Shea and passed away March 24, 2014, in her Springfield home.

Gail graduated from Southwest Missouri State University (now MSU) with a bachelor's and Master's degree and spent the next 31 years devoting her life to teaching. She taught drama at El Dorado Springs High School and Ozark High School before starting her 25+ year career at Hillcrest High School in Springfield. She first taught speech and debate, English and finally journalism, which was her true calling. She also taught per course at MSU. She was the epitome of an outstanding teacher. She respected her students and worked tirelessly to help them become successful in the careers. She kept in contact with many of her students throughout her life. Her overwhelming pride in their successes was a high point of her life. Her students reciprocated with the same friendship and respect for her.

After retiring from teaching, Gail and her late husband, Earl, became involved in the Cat Fanciers Association (CFA). Together they started breeding and showing Himalayan Persians becoming one of the Breeders in the Midwest. After Earl passed away in 2006, she continued breeding and showing as well as becoming webmaster for the CFA Midwest Region website. She received the region's Spotlight Award in recognition of her contributions to CFA.

Gail was the friend everyone wished they could have. There was nothing she wouldn't do for others. She put others before herself and never wanted anything in return. She exemplified the truest form of friendship. Her kindness, loyalty and devotion to others will never be forgotten. She will live forever in the hearts of those who were fortunate to know her.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Venita and Edward O'Shea and her beloved husband, Earl Rothman. She is survived by the pride and joy of her life, her two sons, Thomas Wiggins, Springfield, and Michael Wiggins, South Bend, Indiana, his wife Tabatha and two granddaughters Gabrielle and Brienna.

Funeral services will be at 2:00 p.m. Friday March 28, 2014 in Herman H. Lohmeyer Funeral Home, 500 E. Walnut St. Burial will follow in Greenlawn Memorial Gardens.
