Shirley Jean Brake, 84, Springfield, passed away at 5:33 p.m. Friday, May 9, 2014 in Mercy Hospital. She was born August 20, 1929 in Montgomery, Iowa, the daughter of Virgil L. and Esther Head.
Shirley worked as an office manager for Springfield Medical Lab for over 30 years.
She was a very active member of her community, volunteering with the Elks Lodge, Meals on Wheels, Beta Sigma Phi Sorority and Juanita K. Hammon's Hall. Shirley loved to travel and vacationed from the east to the west coast.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her first husband, Clyde Butler; her second husband, James T. Brake; one brother; one sister; and a step-daughter, Linda Bradley.
Shirley is survived by a daughter, Jeannie Butler; son, Greg Butler; three grandchildren, Tammy Walker, Sherri (Ray) Cervantes and Scott Bradley; four great-grandchildren, Joshua, Jonathan, Aaron and Danielle Cervantes; her special friend, Paul Appling; as well as several nieces and nephews.
Memorial services will be held at 1:00 p.m. Tuesday, May 13, 2014 in Gorman-Scharpf Brentwood Chapel. Visitation will be held from noon until service time. Family burial will be at a later date in White Chapel Memorial Gardens.
