Jack Wood

Jack Wood, 84, of Springfield, MO passed away June 11, 2014 in his home. Jack was born April 13, 1930 in Bronte, Texas to O'haskell and Hellen (Sellers) Wood. His family later moved to Springfield, MO where he attended school and worked at Walgreens and other various jobs. He also promoted a drag strip in Edna, Kansas. He met his "Sugar Doll", Shirley Burks, at a root beer stand she was working at and they were married on February 1,1949. He was drafted in the army in 1952, and spent two years in Germany. Upon his return from the military, he worked at Black and Veatch in Kansas City. Later he relocated the family to Springfield where he spent 25 years working as a draftsman at Paul Mueller, followed by Doing Steel among other places. He was a member of the Reorganized Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, Springfield, Mo. He loved classic cars, and participating in the antique swap meet at Springfield Fair Grounds for the last 36 years, spending time with his family, and playing the occasional prank.

He was preceded in death by his loving wife of 62 years Shirley, who passed away July 6, 2011, both of his parents, sister Wilma Jean Tweedy, of Kansas City, and a son in law, Rusty Kirkey, of Springfield, MO.

He is survived by son Jack Wood Jr. and wife Debbie, a daughter Nanette Kirkey, and son Greg Wood and wife Terry, all of Springfield, Mo; three "favorite" grandchildren, Natalie Mathis and husband Jack Sullivan, of Greenbrier, AR, Justine Flannigan and husband Nick, of Fair Grove, MO, and Colton Kirkey and wife Cassie, of Springfield, MO; a great-grandson, Jace Sullivan, and a great-granddaughter Ryann Jean Flannigan; a sister, JoAnn Taylor, of Kansas City, MO, and many other friends and family.

Visitation will be Monday, June 16, 2014 from 6-8pm at Greenlawn Funeral Home North. Services will be held June 17th, at 9:30 a.m. at Greenlawn North followed by burial services held at Missouri Veterans Cemetery, Springfield, Mo, at 11:00 a.m. online condolences may be made at www.greenlawnfuneralhome.com
