Doris L. Havel, 89, died on August 22, 2014. She and her husband, Jerome (Jerry) Havel, who passed away in 2004, will be remembered as a devoted couple, married for 58 years. They raised two sons in Little Silver, NJ, and subsequently moved to Springfield, MO in 1995 to be close to family.
Doris was born in Bloomfield, NJ to William & Mary Fuess and was the youngest of 5 daughters. She earned her RN degree at Mountainside School of Nursing in Montclair, NJ, putting her training to use over the years in various volunteer groups, including Hospice.
Doris was a "stay at home Mom" and devoted much of her time to local charities, church, scouting, and enjoying life on the Jersey shore. After the boys were grown and Jerry retired, they traveled and camped across the US and made several sightseeing trips to Europe and Alaska. Despite bum knees, she embraced tennis and skiing as a member of the Schussboomers Ski Club. After moving to Springfield, Doris became active in the Springfield Hospitality Club, TLC Nurses, and Holy Trinity Church choir and guilds.
Doris was preceded in death by her parents and four sisters. Doris is survived by her two sons, Richard and his wife, Judy, of Stafford, VA, and John, of Springfield, MO; two grandchildren, Patrick of Madisonville, LA and Timothy of Camarillo, CA; and two great-grandchildren, Lorelei and Arwyn.
Funeral mass will be held at 10 AM on Saturday, August 30, at Holy Trinity Catholic Church. Prayer service and visitation will be from 5-7 PM on Friday, August 29, at Gorman-Scharpf Funeral Home.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Community Hospices of America Foundation, Boy Scouts of America, or the Holy Trinity Building Fund.
