Bert Terrell Obituary

Bert Terrell

Bert Terrell, 73, went home to be with his Lord and Savior on Thursday, May 5, 2011.

Bert was born June 13, 1937 in San Diego, CA to Albert and Josephine Terrell. Bert was preceded in death by his parents and a son, John Bertie. Bert is survived by his beloved wife, Donna; his children, Jenny Derks and husband Gene, Janetta Lee and husband Chuck, Joel Terrell, Jeff Terrell and wife Jolene; grandchildren, Alexis, Chelsy, Chloe, Barbie, Chip, Nicholas, Nora, John, Sarah, Cavin, Stephen, Kallie and Elijah; great grandchild, Mason; his brother, Steve and wife Elsa.

After being raised in Southern California, Bert joined the United States Air Force and was stationed in southern Japan. During this time Bert was a champion cyclist competing in both road and track races. Bert was discharged from the Air Force and moved to Central Missouri to assist his parents with the family farm. At the age of 24, Bert accepted Jesus Christ as his personal savior and married Donna Potts. These two decisions formed the foundation for the rest of his life.

Bert trained at Biola College and Baptist Bible College to work in full time ministry. This training was utilized throughout his life in endeavors ranging from the founding of New Testament Baptist Church and Christian School in Norton, MA to hosting a weekly TV broadcast, The High Street Hour. In later years, he completed training that allowed him to serve as a chaplain at St. Johns Hospital. He never saw a challenge that he felt he couldn't meet, because he knew that nothing is impossible with God.

Bert believed that the words of scripture were true and he lived according to these truths. As a Christian, Bert's greatest passion and enjoyment was to teach the Bible and to encourage others in their walk with the Lord. As a pastor, business man, hospital chaplain and Bible teacher, Bert touched many lives because he genuinely cared for people and was willing to help.

Bert and Donna were married for nearly 50 years, devoting themselves to loving each other, their family and serving the Lord. Bert always knew that the best gift God had given him was Donna, and Donna loved and supported Bert in every aspect of life. Bert dearly loved his children and grandchildren, and enjoyed playing chess and ping pong, swimming in the pool and spending quality time talking and sharing together. He was committed to his family in every way and will be dearly missed by each family member.

Bert was such a blessing when I met him while my friend was getting weekly chemo last spring-summer. At the end of her struggle when she was too weak to hold her head up Bert kept running back and forth for us to make sure they got her in PDQ. Donna, you may remember us, as we met you too the day Bert and my friend, Donna, got chemo at the same time and you two ended up in the same color yellow shirts. After Donna passed I went back to thank Bert for all his kindness, but never was able to catch up with him. I have no doubt now that Donna has done so herself.
I lost my husband to cancer 3 years ago, so I know that the days and months to come will be hard, even though you know he's with God. I will keep you in my prayers for peace and strength.
Hugs and love to you.

Dear Sweet Donna and Family,

We were so sorry to hear of Bert's passing... But we rejoice in knowing he is enjoying Jesus right now! What a wonderful testimony to the Lord, Bert's life... We are thankful to have been a part of that blessing of having you and Bert as friends while we lived in MO. We will be praying for you and your family during this time of transition.

Rev. Terrell was such an important part in the work of God during the passing of my dad at St. John's hospital in December,2009. I have told the story of our time together to many fellow believers since that day. Rev. Terrell and I were able to share deep encouragement to one another. On that difficult day in my life, Rev. Terrell shared the story of his terminal illness privately with me. The Lord gave special words to me to share with Rev. Terrell about his last days. Rev. Terrell said that he was supposed to be comforting me and it turned out that I was the one to be comforting him. What a privilege for me to be used of God so clearly! Rev. Terrell had received the call to come to my father's room at the time of his passing. He told me that it was almost time to leave work but he was prompted to come anyway as chaplain to this death event. The time spent in my father's hospital room with Rev. Terrell was one of the greatest moments in my life. I am rejoicing in his presence with the Lord and praying for the comfort of his family.

I was rather shocked to pull up the paper and see our friend, Bert, had gone to be with the Lord. It is with great sympathy I mourn for the family and rejoice that Bert is with our Lord. Donna, you were a great helpmeet to him and you will be in my prayers for comfort and this difficult time.
