Carol Langsford

Former Greene County Treasurer and local business owner J. Carol Langsford passed away on April 26. She was 79. Carol had been president of automotive trade journal company MD Publications since the 1992 death of her husband, Les, the company's co-founder.

Carol was born in Montana, Kan., in 1933. She graduated from Labette County Community High School in Altamont, Kan.

Carol met Les through their mutual love for music. Les was playing with a traveling swing band in Parsons, Kan. Carol sang a couple of numbers with the group. The couple were married in 1952.

Carol was both interested and active in politics, holding numerous offices within the Republican Party including ward committeewoman, state legislative district chair, Seventh Congressional District Chair and president of the Greene County Republican Women's Club. Carol also was a member of the Springfield chapter of the American Association of Women Accountants.

She served 17 years in elective office as Greene County treasurer, giving up that position in 1991 to devote her full-time attention to her family's growing publishing businesses.

Carol was preceded in death by her parents, Ora & Mona Jacobs; her husband Les; a brother, Walter Lee Jacobs; a sister, Neva Lorene Denton-Holden; a daughter, Carol Jeannine; and sons Lester Robert III "Rokey" and Timothy Paul Langsford. She is survived by two sisters, Marylee York and Betty Brown (Mac); twin daughters Michelle Dickemann (Barry) and Lindy Martin (Dean); son Breck Langsford (Amanda); and grandchildren Lester Robert Langsford IV; Kara, Mason and Rokey Dickemann; Max and Brad Prugger; Jake, Josh and Joe Langsford; and numerous other relatives, associates and friends.

In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the MD Anderson Cancer Clinic, 1515 Holcombe Blvd., Houston, TX 77030.

Visitation will be held Monday, April 30 2012 from 5 to 7 p.m. in Gorman-Scharpf Brentwood Chapel. Funeral services will be held Tuesday, May 1, 2012 at 2 p.m. in the funeral home. Interment will follow at Greenlawn Memorial Gardens.
