Arkie Lee Brazeal
Arkie Lee Brazeal age 92 of Kansas City left this world peacefully on February 2, 2013 surrounded by family. Arkie was born in Cedar Creek, MO on April 16, 1920, the third of five children of Walter L. Fine and Dona L. Hendryx. Her family moved to Idaho during the 1930s, but Arkie moved back to Taney County as a teenager and married James H. Brazeal, Sr. in 1938. She and Jim moved to Springfield in 1940 when daughter Rowena was born. They had two sons, Jim, Jr. and William A. (Bill) Brazeal.
Arkie was preceded in death by her parents, husband Jim, daughter Rowena Pollock, grandson James Pollock, her two sisters Argie Brown and Jonni Wernick and her brother Floyd Fine. She is survived by her sister Evelyn Cooper, sons Jim (Catherine) and Bill (Mary Anne) Brazeal, of Johnson County, KS, eight grandchildren and four great grandchildren.
After Jim, Sr. died in 1956, Arkie became the owner and operator of Jack & Jill Nursery for over 20 years. This child care center located on North Grant Street in Springfield was a perfect place for Arkie, a nurturing person, to raise her 3 children without leaving the home. She made lasting friends with the nursery children, even as they grew up, and with their parents, some of whom were Arkie's best friends. Her nurturing side was also evident in her love and caring for her poodles and by gardening skills, with her front yard on Grant Street crowded with dahlias, roses and many other beautiful flowers. She liked to make quilts for gifts and to collect dolls, dishes and other pretty things. She took pride in her appearance, and enjoyed wearing stylish and well tailored clothes. She liked about anything with a sparkle or shine to it.
She was dearly loved by her family and friends who enjoyed her grand and often mischievous sense of humor. She loved to laugh and to make others laugh and she delighted in playing practical jokes on those she especially liked. After Rowena, her best friend as well as her daughter, died in 2001, Arkie moved to the Kansas City area to be close to children and grandchildren.
