Elizabeth Gayle Riggins

Elizabeth Gayle Riggins, 64, Rogersville, MO, passed away April 14, 2013, in her home after a long battle with Multiple System Atrophy. She was born April 5, 1949, to Charles and Betty O'Neal in Stillwater, OK.

Gayle was united in marriage to Jim K. Riggins Dec. 29, 1983, in Springfield, MO.

She was a 1967 graduate of Memorial High School, Tulsa, OK. She earned her undergraduate degree in 1971 at Drury University, Springfield, MO, where she was a member of the Pi Beta Phi sorority. She received her Master's degree in 1979 in Elementary Education/Counseling from Missouri State University, Springfield, MO.

Gayle taught elementary school at Miller, MO, and she was an elementary counselor at Pleasant Hope, MO, and St. James, MO. She served as an elementary counselor at Logan-Rogersville Lower Elementary from 1986-2001. After she retired, she worked part-time until May of 2010 as the process coordinator for special education for the Logan-Rogersville School System.

She was a member of the Missouri State Teachers Association, Community Teachers Association, Missouri School Counselors Association, South Central Missouri School Counselors Association, and served as President during the 1985-86 school year.

Gayle had a tremendous love of golf. She coached golf at the high school level for 8 years. She had 2 holes in one in her lifetime, at Sedalia Country Club and Millwood Golf Club.

She always wanted everyone to be: "The most brilliant color in the box."

Gayle was a member of the Unity of Springfield Church.

She is survived by her husband, Jim, of the home; her parents, Charles and Betty O'Neal, Tulsa, OK; a sister, Melissa Nicholson, and her husband Steve, Zephyrhills, FL; a brother, Charles O'Neal, Broken Arrow, OK; a stepson, Todd Riggins, and his wife Melissa, Battlefield, MO; two nieces, Jennifer Rosenberg, Tulsa, OK, and Kimberly Johnson, Zephyrhills, FL; a great-nephew, Christian Rosenberg; a great-niece, Stephanie Johnson; and two step-grandchildren, Shelby and MaKenna.

A celebration of Gayle's life will be held Friday May 17, 2013, at 5:00 p.m.at the Gillioz Theater, Springfield, MO. A reception will follow immediately after the celebration upstairs at Wellingtons.

The family would like to say thank you to Hospice Compassus for their wonderful care during this time, and also to the home care givers. We appreciate all you did for Gayle.
