Harriet Mae (Hamler) Eells, age 94, of Springfield, Mo. passed away May 29, 2013 at Mercy Hospital with her family by her side. She was born February 12, 1919 on the family farm to Harry T. and Fannie Hamler near Belpre, Ks. Growing up witnessing the effects of the "dust bowl" and the Great Depression, she graduated from high school in 1937. Having won a scholarship, Harriet studied art at the Kansas City Art Institute in Kansas City, Mo. While there, she met and married her husband, Elmer C. "Red" Eells. Together they lovingly reared four children and were actively involved in encouraging their interests and skills, especially in Boy Scouts. Harriet and Red called Brentwood Christian Church their church home, teaching Sunday school and cooking many church dinners while there.
Harriet was preceded in death by her husband of 47 years, Red; her son, Tom; and three of her six sisters, Eleanor, Margery and Doris.
She is survived by her daughter, Leslie Fankhauser (Jerry); son, John Eells (Julie) of Springfield, Mo.; son, Jim Eells (Elizabeth) of Phoenix, Az.; five grandchildren, Ellen Eells, Elaine Eells, Kaylea Eells, Mia Eells and Ben Fankhauser; and four great-grandchildren, Gabby, Joey, Samantha and Emily. She is also survived by two sisters, Carolyn Davies and Genevive Turner, both of Kansas, and many nieces and nephews.
Following cremation, Harriet will be laid to rest next to her husband in National Cemetery with a graveside service on Friday, June 14, 2013 at 1:00 pm. In lieu of flowers, the family has kindly asked that donations be made to
