Eugene Arthur "Gene" Bounous, age 91, of Monett, Mo., met his Lord and Savior on the morning of June 11, 2013. Gene was born on November 30, 1921 in Monett, the son of the late Frederick E. Bounous and Victorine (Avondet) Bounous.
Gene was a lifelong resident of Monett and was the final member of the first generation of Waldensians born in America. He was a 1938 graduate of Monett High School. In 1943, Gene was drafted into the United States Army Air Corps, where he served overseas during World War II as a Flight Engineer. For over three decades, Gene co-owned and operated B&H Garage in Monett. He was also a cattleman. He enjoyed gardening and spending time with his family and friends. Eugene was a member of the Waldensian Presbyterian Church in Monett.
On September 30, 1950, Gene married Helane Marie Haddock. They were blessed with over forty-seven years together before her passing on March 26, 1998. To this union two children were born.
Gene is survived by one son, Mike Bounous, and his wife Rebecca Lynn, of Strafford, Mo.; one daughter, Vicki Sutton, of Springfield, Mo.; four grandchildren: Sarah Worthy, Samuel Bounous, Allen Sutton and Alexander Sutton, all of Springfield, Mo.; six great-grandchildren; a special cousin, Robert Bounous, of Monett; as well as a host of extended family and friends.
Gene was preceded in death by his wife, Helane Bounous; his parents, Fred and Victorine Bounous; two brothers, Daniel and Calvin Bounous; and one sister, Freda Hewlett.
Funeral services for Mr. Bounous will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday, June 15, 2013 in the Buchanan Funeral Home Chapel in Monett, with Reverend Vicki Evans officiating. Visitation will begin at 1:00 p.m. on Saturday at the funeral home. Interment and military honors will be held in the Spring River Cemetery in Verona, Mo.
