Harry LeRoy Welch of Springfield, MO, passed away at 8:40pm, July 5, 2013.
Harry was born to Harry and Margaret Welch on October 4th, 1919, in Paola, KS. At age 17, he trained and served with the 114th Kansas Cavalry while attending Arma (Kansas) High School.
Harry served in the US Army from 1936 - 1967 and held the rank of Captain. He served in World War II, Korea and Vietnam.
Harry served on the Olathe (Kansas) City Council for four years and was elected Mayor of Olathe in 1972. During his term he organized nationally recognized two week furloughs for Vietnam Servicemen, paid for through public donations.
Harry married Anna Ferne Turner on October 12, 1941, and the couple had three children: Patricia, Robert and Gary Welch.
Harry married his second wife, Doris Rachel Brown, on May 21, 1984.
Harry was actively involved in the American Legion and the 40 & 8 and served as Commander of Zack Wheat Post 624.
He was the coordinator for the Memorial to the Veterans of All Wars in Sunrise Beach, MO.
He was preceded in death by his first wife, Anna Ferne Welch; second wife, Doris Rachel Welch; daughter Patricia Welch; sons Robert and Gary Welch; his parents; and half-brother, Eldon Nicholson.
He is survived by grandsons Chad Welch, Denver, CO and Brody Welch, Portland, OR, a granddaughter, Amy Kahle (Robert), Pea Ridge, AR, great-grandson Daniel Kahle and great-granddaughter Sara Kahle, both of Pea Ridge, AR.
Visitation will be Thursday, July 11, 2013 from 11:30am to 12:30pm in Gorman-Scharpf Funeral Home. Graveside service will be Thursday at 1:00pm in Missouri Veteran's Cemetery.
