John Bennett Klingner, Jr.
John Bennett Klingner Jr. was born on December 15, 1933 in Springfield Missouri to Bennett and Catherine Klingner and passed away on August 25, 2013 at age 79. John was the President of Klingner Mortuary, a four generation family business, previously under the direction of John Wesley Klingner, John Bennett Klingner Sr. and assistant Julie Klingner Creach, John's grandfather, father and daughter. In his early years, John's first job at the mortuary was polishing the chapel pews with his cousin George Klingner which often resulted in a game of chase. In 1983, John was instrumental in restoring the horse drawn hearse which was purchased in 1909. John retired in 1998 and continued serving families as a consultant for Klingner-Cope Funeral Home for several years.
John was a lifelong member at Campbell United Methodist Church where his great-grandfather John Wesley Klingner served as a circuit preacher in Southwest Missouri.
John was an avid sportsman in softball/baseball. He played in several competitive school, church and business leagues. John was drafted by the New York Yankees and attended training camp in Oklahoma until he returned home to his family.
As a craftsman, John built a speedboat, sail boat and houseboat with a dear friend Bob Charton. He later bought a houseboat "the big one" which was a weekend home at Table Rock Lake for family and friends.
A founding member at Greene Hills Golf Course, John spent much of his time playing golf. He had a standing game every Thursday with Dick Bonham, Bob Umphres and Bill Gould which lasted over 40 years.
John married his high school sweetheart Jane Owen Klingner on February 14, 1953. In hopes of a son, they had three daughters. John is survived by his wife of 60 years, Jane Klingner, three daughters, eight grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren (with one on the way)and their spouses; Julie and David Creach, Janell and Greg Royal, Jennifer Hill Prugger and Charlie Prugger. Grandchildren include Brent and Kim Creach, Tyler and Krystal Creach, Molly and Jared Terry, Brandon and Sarah Royal, Jennifer and Robert Yanders, Dylan and Felecia Hill, Chelsea Hill and Andrea Hill. Great- grandchildren Kinsley Creach, Cameron Creach, Jordan Terry, Hannah Terry, Olivia Royal, Natalie Royal, Marley Hill. John is also survived by several nephews, nieces and relatives. John was preceded in death by his parents, a sister Linda Campbell, a grandson Joseph Royal and a son-in-law Mick Hill.
John enjoyed a full life of laughter, love, family and friendships. He will always be remembered for his compassion, kindness and service to others. John will forever be in our hearts. Visitation will be Wednesday, August 28, at Klingner-Cope Midtown Funeral Home, 1635 N. Benton from 4:00 to 7:00 p.m. Graveside services will be Thursday, August 29 at 11:00 a.m. at Hazelwood Cemetery.
