Bert W. Atteberry

Bert W. Atteberry, age 91, of Springfield, MO, passed away Friday, October 18, 2013 peacefully in his home. He was born in Dallas County, Mo. He was retired manager of Special Movements for Frisco Railroad. He served in the United States Army during WWII. His unit the 25th field artillery, was attached to Patton's third Army in the relief of the Battling Bastards of Bastogne, in the Battle of the Bulge.

Following the war, he spent 20 years as First Sgt. In the U.S. Army Reserve, receiving a special achievement award as Military Man of the Year for his service. Bert helped start the V.F.W. Post #3404, in 1966 and served as its commander for many years and led the Veteran's Memorial Team. He also helped organize several other V.F.W. posts in the area. He was instrumental in obtaining the land for Springfield's Missouri Veteran's Memorial Cemetery.

Bert was preceded in death by his parents. He was one of ten children. One brother Richard of Topeka, KS, and a sister Phyllis Chorthan of Kansas City, KS survive. He was also preceded in death by his first wife Marjorie J., in 1983, and his second wife Edna, in 2011, and his best friend Bob Talley, in 2012. Bert is survived by his two daughters: Jeanette Masten and her husband Toby, of Springfield and Terri Atteberry, of the home; a grandson, Jeremy Davis and his wife Jennifer of CA. and several step-grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held at 1:00 p.m., Friday, October 25, 2013 in Greenlawn Funeral Home North, with Rev. Wally Jones officiating. Burial with Military Honors will be in the White Chapel Memorial Gardens, Springfield. Visitation will be held from 5 to 7 pm on Thursday, October 24, 2013 in the funeral home. Memorial contributions may be made to the Frisco Railroad Museum at Grant Beach Park, or to the V.F.W. Post #3404. Services have been entrusted to Greenlawn Funeral Home North, Springfield.
