James W. Johnston, resident of the Claremore Veterans Center passed away Saturday, October 26, 2013 at the age of 92. James was born November 13, 1920 at Berryville, Arkansas to Roy and Fay (Ringler) Johnston. He was raised and received his education at Miami, OK, graduating high school there. In August of 1942, James and Helen Todhunter were united in marriage. Later that month, James was inducted into the U.S. Army Air Corp, serving in the American Theater in Central Europe. During this time he received two Bronze Stars. He was discharged in November of 1945. After returning home, James and Helen continued to live in Miami, until moving to Springfield, MO. He retired from the Burlington Northern Railroad as an accounting clerk. Following the death of his wife Helen, James married Faye (Sellars) Whitwell at Miami, OK. In 2003, they moved to Noble, OK. He has been in the Veterans Center for the past 1 ½ years. James was a longtime member of the Christian Church, having served as an elder; and had been a Major in the Civil Air Patrol. Family was an important part of his life, but he also found time for fishing and woodworking. In later years, he enjoyed doing genealogy.
Those that survive include his wife Faye Johnston of Norman, OK; children Helen Sue Davis and husband Jack of Tulsa; son James Edward Johnston and wife Mary of Springfield, MO; step children Donna Hammons and husband Ron of Noble, OK; Tom Whitwell and wife Sara of Tulsa; two grandchildren Kimberly Davis of Denver, CO and Kevin Davis and wife Rachel of Houston, TX. Also surviving are step grandchildren Dedra Redwine and husband Philip, Keather Hammons and four great grandchildren. James is also survived by six sisters - Hope Edwards of Eldorado, CA, Alice Ramsey of Waterloo, IA, LaVerne Hodgkinson of Bartlesville, OK, Shirley Fain of Bartlesville, Dorothy Fansler of Topeka, KS, Norma Isnard of Bartlesville and numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, first wife and a brother Frank.
Funeral services will be held at 11:00 AM Tuesday, October 29th in the Chapel of Mowery Funeral Service with Rev. Ben Killion officiating. Graveside services will be at 1:00 PM Wednesday at the Greenlawn Memorial Gardens Cemetery, Springfield, MO with Ed Holt officiating. Services were entrusted to Mowery Funeral Service of Owasso. www.moweryfs.com
