Frank Farmer Obituary

Frank O. Farmer

Frank O. Farmer passed away peacefully in his home of 89 years, on February 17, 2014. Frank was born April 7, 1924, to Clifford and Nell Farmer. He was a lifelong resident of the Cave Spring-Willard area.

Preceding him in death were his parents, his daughter Connie Winn and his wife Helen, who passed January 18, 2014.

Frank is survived by his son, Andy and daughter-in-law Cindy; grandchildren: Amy Westermann, husband Will of St. Peters, Mo; Matthew Farmer, wife Autumn of Springfield, Mo., Drew Farmer, wife Katy of Manchester, England, Laura Sweeten, Husband Greg, Springfield, Mo; great grandchildren: Andrew and Katie Westermann, St. Peters, Mo, Telyse Masaoay, Springfield, Mo., Finlay Scott Farmer, Manchester, England, Anna and Isiah Sweeten, Springfield, Mo. Also surviving, a brother-in-law Darrel Cathey of Willard, Mo., along with several nieces and nephews.

Frank and Helen were united in marriage on August 22, 1942, where they lived and operated the family dairy farm. To this union was born one daughter, Connie and one son Andy. Frank continued to farm until the early 60's when the drought forced him to make a change. In 1954, Frank began his career in writing with the MFA Milling Company of Springfield, Mo., writing articles for the MIL-O-Gram, the company public relations periodical.

In 1956, Frank left MFA for the Springfield News and Leader, where he began as a reporter. In 1963, Frank and Mickey Owen Collaborated on "The Boy's Baseball Book", which was sold at Mickey Owen's Baseball School for years at Miller, Mo. Frank has interviewed over the years, many members of Congress, Governors, movie stars and the movers and shakers of the Springfield community along with being given the last written interview granted by FBI Director J. Edgar Hoover, in 1972. One of his most enjoyable assignments as Farm Editor was covering the Ozark Empire Fair every years, where he would meet old friends and make new acquaintances.

On December 3, 1986, Governor John Ashcroft declared this date to be "Frank Farmer Day' in the state of Missouri in honor of his thirty years of public service as a veteran reporter, author and editorial page editor of the Springfield Newspaper. Frank retired to his beloved farm from which he began. However, Frank wasn't done yet, he continued to write a column for the Ozark Farm and Neighbor, which he called "Headin' for the Last Roundup". He loved agriculture and the people involved in the production of our nation's food.

Frank served on numerous boards including the Greene County Farmer's Cooperative, Greene County Extension Council, Greene County Board of Educations, Springfield Library Board, President and member of the Willard R-2 Board of Education and the Missouri Resource Conservation and Development Council. He was also a moving force in the establishment of the Ozark Food Harvest, Good Samaritan Boy's Ranch, The Willard Retirement Village and the Golden Rule Society. His by-line appeared in many trade journals, national magazines and local newspapers and publications of the U. S. Information Agency.

One of Frank's proudest accomplishments was being instrumental in the establishing of Ozark Technical Community College where he served on the Board of Trustees from its inception in 1990 until his retirement from the board in 2008.

Frank's philosophy can be summed up as follows: "A person's character is best judged by the compassion they exhibit to those less fortunate."

Frank and Helen were true friends. When I became President of the Board at the S.W. Mo. Humane Society many years ago, Frank did several very complimentary pieces on me and stood by me in thick and thin. He was a great source of inspiration and courage to me.

Frank was a wonderful mentor to me when I started out as a reporter for the newspaper in the late 1960s. We remained good friends through the years. I have several fond memories of Frank, but my favorite involves an assignment to visit a dairyman when I accompanied Frank as his photographer. We rode out into the country in my car, with me steering to Frank's vague directions. Finally I asked him how much farther was this fellow's farm. Frank's reply: "I don't know. He just said we should drive until we see good grass on both sides of the road." Well, to my city-bred eye, "good grass" was everywhere! But for the next few miles, Frank schooled me: "Now, that's good grass over there, but it's sorry grass over here..." Eventually we crested a hill and Frank announced: "There's good grass on both sides of the road here. This must be the place." I skeptically turned into the driveway -- and, to my amazement, it was, indeed, the farm we were seeking. I hope that Frank and Helen are happy together, surrounded by good grass...

Never was a man more perfectly named than 'FRANK FARMER!' We met back in the 1970s when I was hired to create Editorial Art for the Sunday editions of The News & Leader. His desk was next to the doorway leading into cartoonist, Bob Palmer's office. Once I was carrying an over-sized drawing in to the newsroom to show Mr. Palmer. Mr. Farmer saw it and wanted to buy it. I never sold it but did let him hang it beside his desk for 3 or 4 years. Newsroom visitors would stop to comment on the work and Mr. Farmer became 'my agent,' setting me up with commissions!
He was always mannerly, had a huge following amongst the readership and was greatly respected for his many interests. He was an endeared, kind-hearted friend over many decades. I extend my condolences to all upon learning of his life's end and knowing Frank Farmer - and his sweet wife - are in Paradise.

Andy and Family
My deepest sympathy on the passing of Frank and your mother. I will always be grateful for the investment he made in us as young men playing American Legion baseball.
May GOD make HIS presence known to all of you in a very personal way at this time.

Many years ago I met Frank while I was playing fiddle at Wilson's Creek. He was a kind man with the kind of common sense and love for the Ozarks that spoke to your heart. I've enjoyed his writing and briefly, his friendship. Travel safely Frank, until we meet in another life.

I never knew a more dedicated journalist than Frank. I had the privilege of working with him, learning from him and being a friend. The Ozarks has lost a bright light.

Frank was a wise mentor for me in my early days with The News-Leader and a straight shooter when I covered the OTC Board of Trustees when he was a member. I will always keep a warm place in my heart for Frank. Sincerest sympathies to the family on the loss of Frank and Helen.

As a former teacher in the Willard School system, I always appreciated all that Frank did for the schools and for young people. He had the ability to encourage students with his sense of humor and vast knowledge in many areas. God bless, Lynette Thomas

Frank was number ONE on the list of true FRIENDS OF AGRCULTURE in Southwest Missouri. He rose above one-party politics and led many progressive movements for the betterment of the dairy and beef cattle industry. While a Dade County cattleman and during my involvement with the formation of the Missouri Cattlemans' Association, I worked with Frank as he helped us impart information about many industry successes in the 1970's and 1980's. Cattlemen can all be proud of his life's work.
