Andrew Lewis Obituary

Andrew Wells Lewis

Andrew Wells Lewis, 74, of Springfield, Missouri passed away on October 24, 2017. He was born on September 5, 1943 in Savannah, Georgia. Andy attended Jenkins High School in Savannah and received a B.A. from Dartmouth College in 1966. He completed his Master's degree in history at the University of Chicago in 1967 and received his PhD in history in 1973 from Harvard University with a specialty in medieval France. Andy taught at Missouri State University for over three decades and was a Professor Emeritus at the time of his death. An acclaimed scholar, Andy was a Macarthur Foundation "Genius Grant" Fellow from 1984 to 1989, and received a bevy of awards for his contributions to the field of French history. His legacy as an academic will live on for generations.

Andy's interests included gardening, current events, and all things historical. He was known for his wit, curiosity, and kindness. He was fiercely devoted to and proud of his family, and perhaps his greatest joy was to spend time with his grandson.

Andy was preceded in death by his father, Emanuel Lewis, and his mother, Margaret Lewis. He is survived by his loving wife, Martha Lewis; his daughters, Katherine and Elizabeth Lewis; his son-in-law, Austin Kaplan; grandson, Alexander Lewis Kaplan; brother, Harris Lewis; and brother-in-law, John McEllen.

This weekend Oct 21-22, the 1961 class of HV Jenkins HS will be celebrating a reunion after 60 years. Andy as class vice-president was an outstanding leader. He was among the academic elite of the school and class. While he and I did not maintain contact after high school, our paths were similar as we became college professors. It is a time for memory(ies) and I value the time we worked together for the Class of 1961 HVJHS.

I was shocked to learn just recently and quite belatedly of Andy's passing. We were close chums during our four undergraduate years at Dartmouth. I always respected his deep knowledge of history, and we had many lively discussions; we shared a sense of humor and often engaged in political debate. I will miss him greatly. My condolences go out to his family.

Been thinking a lot about Andy this week, as it is the anniversary of his passing. I find myself remembering all of the times he mentored me over the years, always with a smile and his unique chuckle. He was brilliant and caring. He was passionate about teaching and loved his family, his friends. Keep trying to live up to the example he set as I am now counseling and mentoring students of my own in a dream I would not have had were it not for his guidance over the years from the time I was 18 to when we lost him. We miss you, Andy, but you are with us, in some ways, always. --Sean

Andy was my teacher, my mentor, and my friend. He provided an excellent example for me to become the teacher I am today. I will miss him, his chuckle, his smile, his compassion, and his towering intellect dearly and I wish I could be there today.

More than 55 years ago Andy and I served as officers for the Senior Class at HV Jenkins High, He was a thoughtful, creative and dependable friend then and from his notice remained and evolved into an esteemable scholar and valued man.

Since I only spent two years at Jenkins High, I will always remember Andy as one of the people who always spoke to me in school ... and that meant a lot to a new kid on the block. He was kind and he was oh so smart. My heart and my prayers go out to his family.

We will miss Andy. He was kind to me as I began my new role as department head. I enjoyed his sneaky sense of humor and his passionate interest in Medieval Europe and devotion to his craft. Please accept Tina and my sympathies.
