In Loving Memory of, Raymond George Alvarez Jr. January 18, 2015 Fourth generation and lifelong resident of Fort Myers, Raymond George Alvarez Jr., 69, of North Ft. Myers, FL passed away in his home, with his wife Sheila by his side on Sunday, January 18, 2015. Born February 13, 1945, Raymond was born to long time Ft. Myers residents, Raymond Sr. and Elouise (Pyles) Alvarez. His great grandparents, Antonio and Maria Fernandez came from Portugal and settled in Estero, Florida on Mound Key in 1898. His grandparents Joaquin "King" Alvarez and Anna Jane Fernandez were married on Mound Key in 1907. Ray Jr. was raised in Ft. Myers and attended Ft. Myers High School before joining the US Army in 1962. After an honorable discharge Ray returned to Ft. Myers where he met and then married Sheila (Rea) Alvarez on May 23, 1965. In 1966 he joined Fort Myers Fire Department, where his father Raymond Sr. was an Assistant Chief. In 1975 he graduated from the first formal Paramedic Training Program in Lee County to become one of the first paramedics in the department's history. Ray eventually promoted to Assistant Chief at the FMFD and was given charge of the Ft. Myers Fire Academy for new recruit training. He was also responsible for assembling the hazardous material response team for the department which was one of the first response teams of its type in S.W. Florida. He retired from FMFD in 1989 as an Assistant Chief in order to become the Chief of North Ft. Myers Fire Department. Ray earned a Bachelor's Degree in Public Administration while leading the NFMFD to become the progressive fire department it is today. He became Chief of Immokalee Fire Department in 1996 where he continued to lead firefighters in the improvement of their service until 2009. Ray spent over 43 years in the fire service in the footsteps of his father and as a figurehead for his son which together has made up over 6 decades of service to the Lee County area fire departments. Raymond G. Alvarez Jr. is survived by his devoted wife of 49 years, Sheila Alvarez of North Ft. Myers; children, Derrill Alvarez his wife Laura, daughter Jody Payne; grandchildren, Megan Estremera and her husband Joel, Raquel, Raymond Blain, Bryce Michael; great grandchildren, Naiana, Harrison, Rayden, Jayla; his brother Danny Alvarez, his sister Jane (Alvarez) Fondren. He was preceded in death by his parents, his brothers Ted Alvarez and Rodney Alvarez. He leaves behind a legacy of love, integrity, honor, pride and respect for both his family as well as others. A memorial service will be held to celebrate his life Saturday January 24, 2015 at 1:00pm, First United Methodist Church at 2466 1st Street, Fort Myers, Fl 33901. Andersen, Betty Newbould  
BETTY NEWBOULD ANDERSEN December 18, 2014 Betty Newbould Andersen, 85, of Fort Myers, FL passed away Thursday, December 18, 2014. Originally from Chicago, she was married to Edwin Newbould for 55 years. They raised 4 children and retired to Cape Coral in 1982. After Edwin's death, she moved to Barkley Place in 2007 where she met Wesley Andersen. They were married in 2008. Betty was an avid reader, and enjoyed playing cards with friends. She shared Ed's passion for the 79th Fighter Group reunions they planned and hosted for 30 years. She was active in the Barkley Residents' Association having served as an officer for a number of years. Betty had many dogs during her lifetime, as well as an African Grey parrot. She loved caring for the Barkley Place bird, Daisy. Betty is survived by her devoted husband Wes; son Richard (Mary); daughter Susan (Dan) Andrews; 4 grandchildren, 2 great grandchildren, 4 stepchildren and her cherished chihuahua Zach (Mr. Wonderful). She was preceded in death by her sons William and Patrick. A memorial service is planned for January 22nd at 2pm at Barkley Place. Memorial contributions may be made to The Salvation Army, P.O. Richard Warren Anderson January 18, 2015 Richard Warren Anderson, 87, of N. Fort Myers, died Sunday January 18, 2015 at Hope Hospice in Cape Coral. Services will be held on a later date at Redgate-Hennessy Funeral Directors, 4 Gotham Place, Trumbull, CT 00611, 203-372-3587. Memorials may be left to a charity of the donor's choice. Richard was born February 13, 1927, in Rockford, IL the son of Clarence and Percese (Fitch) Anderson. He married Lucille Rhodes during 1951 and she preceded him in death. He is a veteran of the US Navy. As a civilian he worked as an engineer for the tool and die trade. He enjoyed gardening. Surviving are his daughter, Cindy Anderson of Torrington, CT; son, Rick S. Anderson and his wife Cathy) of Waterbury, CT and two grandchildren Nicole Anderson and Curt Anderson. The Fort Myers Memorial Gardens Funeral Home has been entrusted with the care of Richard.
