James M. Hutchinson

June 13, 2014

James Moore Hutchinson, 87, under care of Avow Hospice, passed away June 13, 2014 in Naples, Florida.

He was born to Ruth Springhorn Hutchinson and Robert A. Hutchinson on September 19, 1926 in Queens, NY, and attended schools there and in Hartford, CT, before attending The Taft School in Watertown, CT. His high school career was interrupted when he enlisted in the Navy, serving mainly at Sampson Naval Base in New York and in Cleveland, OH, where he was sent to radio school in the latter part of World War II. He returned to Taft, graduating in 1947, and then attended Brown University, graduating in 1951. On June 23, 1951, he married Iris Bain. They lived in the Chicago area and Indianapolis, raising a daughter and four sons. They moved to Bonita Springs in 2005.

Jim was hired as an aluminum salesman by ALCOA out of college, working out of offices in Cleveland and Chicago and then as district sales manager in Indianapolis, covering a broad territory of the Midwest before retiring in 1982, when he went into business on his own as a metals trader and broker. He retired fully in 2000, and subsequently moved with Iris to Bonita Springs.

Jim enjoyed all kinds of sports, particularly hockey and sailing, and was inducted into Brown University's Hall of Fame for his role as linebacker on the football team of 1949. He coached youth and high school hockey in Wilmette, IL, and Indianapolis for many years. He also enjoyed golf and international travel, and was a loyal alumnus of Brown.

Jim is survived by his brother Tom Hutchinson of Lincolnshire, IL, his children James, Jr of Oak Park, IL, George of Trumansburg, NY, Melinda of Indianapolis, David of Three Mile Bay, NY, and Charles of Clarendon Hills, IL; and by 12 grandchildren and one great grandson.

A celebration of life will be held later in New York and Indianapolis. In lieu of flowers, donations to Hockey on Your Block would be appreciated (www.hockeyonyourblock.org). Online condolences may be offered at www.shikanyfuneralhome.com.
