Arthur K. Knudsen, Jr., 85, passed away in Fort Myers, FL on February 26, 2012. Born in Chicago, Illinois on March 26, 1926, he was the son of the late Arthur and Louise Knudsen. He married Christie Louise Kerth of Paducah, Kentucky on December 21, 1947. Art is survived by his wife Christie of 64 years, his daughter, Christie Karol Knudsen of Fort Myers, his granddaughter Andrea Lee Schuch of Tampa, FL, his grandson, Brian Kerth Schuch and wife Natsuko, and his great-grandson, Avery Schuch of Matsuyama, Japan, and his sister-in-law, Mary Elizabeth Woods and husband Jack of Fort Myers. He is also survived by his nieces and nephews: Mike Woods and wife Valerie (children Tami, Tim, Shane, and Tom), Mary Kristie Smith and husband Todd (children Chase and Adam), Lisa Woods, and John Woods and wife Bitsy (children Matt and Caroline).
Art served in the United States Army during World War II. He was assigned to the 273rd Regiment, Company H of the 69th Infantry Division, as a member of the Heavy Weapons Company Machine Gun Squad. He crossed the Rhine River at Remagen with his division on his 19th birthday and on April 25 his division met the Soviet soldiers at the Elbe River.
Art attended Michigan State University and received his Bachelor of Laws Degree from Duke University in June 1950. After the cold winters he experienced in Germany, Art decided to live in a warm climate so he and Christie moved to Fort Myers. George Allen and Art formed the Allen and Knudsen law firm in 1951 and over the next 50 years, he had the privilege to practice and partner with many fine attorneys in Fort Myers.
From 1961-1964, Art served as the City of Fort Myers attorney. He was President of the Lee County Bar Association and President of the Fort Myers Kiwanis Club. Art and Christie were founding members of the Wesley Memorial United Methodist Church and he served as the Chairman of the Board of Trustees for many years.
Art enjoyed playing golf and poker with his friends, and he and Christie were members of the Cypress Lake Country Club. He loved traveling with his family and friends and took many trips overseas.
Art was a kind, loving, and intelligent man, respected by those who knew him. He was beloved by his family and friends and he will be greatly missed.
A memorial service is scheduled for Friday, March 2, 2012 at Fort Myers Memorial Gardens Cemetery at 10am.
