1941 - 2011 Obituary Condolences

OCTOBER 19, 2011

Husband, father, grandfather, brother, and devoted child of God, Dr. James Harris passed away in Fort Myers on October 19, 2011. He was born in Mount Airy, North Carolina, on December 9, 1941, and was the second child of Charles and Lilla Harris. He is survived by his brothers, Charles Harris and John Harris, both of Mount Airy, NC.

During his undergraduate years, James met Betty Ann Booth of Philadelphia, PA. They were married in 1963. After graduating college, James moved to Philadelphia with Betty, where James graduated from medical school in 1968, earning his doctorate. He subsequently completed his residency in general surgery in 1973 and also earned a masters in surgery degree, and began his life as an incredibly gifted and dedicated general & trauma surgeon in private practice. Among James's many career accomplishments was his service as as Chief of Surgery and Chief of General Surgery at his community hospital, building a trauma center, training general surgery resident-physicians, being elected fellow of various surgical associations and societies, and having performed nearly 60,000 surgeries. James also served as a Lieutenant Colonel in the United States Army Reserve Medical Corps.

James and Betty had three children: James Christian Harris, David Hughes Harris, and Brian Linwood Harris; and four grandchildren: Dylan, Peyton, Gabriel, and Taylor. James was a devoted husband, father, and grandfather, which he claimed were his greatest achievements. He was our teacher, our mentor, our compass, and always a source of passionate encouragement in all aspects of our lives. Dad's lessons live on in each of us. He will be sorely missed.

James dutifully fulfilled his purpose while here, and God is smiling upon His gift to us all.

A worship service celebrating his life will be held at Zion Lutheran Church, Winkler Road, Fort Myers, on Saturday, November 5, 2011 at 11:00 a.m. for family and friends. In lieu of flowers, the family is requesting donations be made to Hope Hospice, 9470 HealthPark Circle, Fort Myers, FL 33908 (1-800-835-1673).
