James L. Richards, a resident of Fort Myers Beach, Florida, since 1974, passed away on January 1st, 2013 peacefully at Joanne's house in Bonita Springs, Florida.
He was born August 10, 1929 in Ashtabula, Ohio. After high school and at the young age of 21, he was employed by Standard Oil Company managing one of their largest Service Stations in Ohio. The Army called him to service in 1952 at Breckinridge, Kentucky. He served as an instructor in radio at Fort Benning, Georgia until his discharge in 1954. He was named Outstanding Trainee of Basic Training for Officer Candidate School, but elected to return to Standard Oil in his hometown of Ashtabula. Following four more years of employment by Standard Oil, Jim and two of his brothers opened and operated three service stations in the Ashtabula area for Fourteen years.
Jim was very active in the Elks Club of Ashtabula and served as Exalted Ruler in 1967. He was awarded for his involvement in the Jaycee's and served as Division Chairman for Teen-Age Rodeo for two years. In 1973, Jim was offered a position as Project Manager for Island Winds Condominium on Fort Myers Beach, Florida. He quickly sold his share of the stations and moved his now ample family and his wife Rosemary to Fort Myers Beach. He stayed at Island Winds until 1976 and then moved on to manage Bay Beach Condominiums. He enjoyed 16 years of employment there until he retired in 1992. Jim spent his retirement years helping to raise grandkids, studying and investing in the stock market, growing palm trees and many other plants He loved working outside and could grow anything from seeds. Left to cherish his memory is his loving wife of 62 years, Rosemary; children, Robert (Linda) Richards of Woodboro, Maryland, Ronald (Leslie) Richards, Alan (Michelle) Richards, Daniel (Cindy) Richards and Bradley Richards all of Fort Myers, Florida. His family was also blessed with many grandchildren; Tammy, Michelle, Jimmy, Ryan, David, Jesse, Nicole, Laura, Lisa, Danielle and Christopher.
He will be missed by all for his willingness to always help his family and others, his great sense of humor and his compassion for all things living. A memorial service will be held in the Fort Myers Memorial Gardens Chapel at 1589 Colonial Blvd, Fort Myers, Florida at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, January 5, 2013. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Joanne's House at Hope Hospice, 27200 Imperial Parkway, Bonita Springs, Florida, 34135.
