Jeanne (Mahan) Coates, 86, of Rehoboth, MA, passed away peacefully, surrounded by family, Friday, Sept. 6, at Philip Hulitar Hospice Center, Providence, RI. She was born in New Haven, CT, daughter of the late William and Annabel Mahan. She was the widow of Jack Coates.
Jeanne was a graduate of Framingham State Teachers College, and taught school in Colorado Springs, CO, before raising her family in Natick and Framingham, MA, and Barrington, RI. She loved her summers in Popponesset Beach, Mashpee, MA, and winters in Lehigh Acres, FL.
A literacy tutor for the Lehigh Acres Literacy Council for many years, Jeanne was certified as a SCUBA diver in the early 1960s, and performed on a water ballet team.
She was an avid tennis player, enjoyed international travel, dogs and cats, and had a treasured lifelong group of friends.
Jeanne leaves a sister, Ann Hudson of Lehigh Acres, FL; a son and daughter-in-law, Christopher and Linda Lynch of Mashpee, MA; a daughter and son-in-law, Nancy and Scott Crossley, of Rehoboth, MA; two grandchildren, Air Force Capt. Adam Lynch of Laughlin AFB, TX; and Katelyn Crossley of Rehoboth, MA; two great grandchildren; six nieces and nephews and their families.
Calling hours will be on Tuesday, Sept. 10, from 4-7 pm at Chapman Cole and Gleason, 74 Algonquin Ave.,, (at Route 151) Mashpee, MA. A funeral Mass will be celebrated Wednesday, Sept. 11, at 11:00 am in Christ the King Church, 3 Jobs Fishing Road, Mashpee. Burial will be private.
