Charles M. Sappenfield, FAIA, (83) passed away on Monday, September 30, 2013, in Ft. Myers, Florida.
He was born on March 17, 1930 in Columbia, South Carolina to Charles M Sappenfield Jr and Elizabeth O. Moss and grew up in Columbia, South Carolina and Charlotte, North Carolina, graduating from Charlotte's Central High School. He entered North Carolina State University in the Architecture program. He left the University to work in Chicago as a Designer with Pace Associates Architects and then was drafted into the U.S. Army where he served in Heidelberg, Germany. He returned to graduate in 1956 from NC State's School of Design with a Bachelor of Architecture. He taught in architecture at NC State and worked as a Designer for JB King Architect in Asheville, NC.
In 1960-61 he received a Fulbright scholarship for study in Denmark, which began a lifelong connection to the country to which he returned many times.
Charlie returned to Asheville, NC to practice and founded the firm of Sappenfield, Wiegman, Hall Architects, where he completed numerous built projects. In Asheville, he married Mary Frances McGowan in 1963.
In 1965, Charlie became the founding Dean of the College of Architecture and Planning at Ball State University, as the College became Indiana's first and only state-supported architecture school. He served as Dean for 16 years and continued to teach as a professor until his retirement in 1994.
Charlie retired to Sanibel, Florida and later moved to Ft Myers. He is survived by his son Ross, daughter-in-law, Laura, three grandchildren, Anne, Alice, Helena, and his daughter, Sally. He is also survived by his niece, Patty Edelman and nephew, Mike Campbell and great nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his sister, Dottie and brother-in-law, Keen Campbell.
Services will be held on Saturday, October 12, 2013 at 11 AM at St. Michael & All Angels Episcopal Church on Sanibel Island, Florida. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be sent to the Charles M. Sappenfield Guest Lecture Series at Ball State University, Muncie, Indiana.
