Arthur Shands "Bud" Heald

Arthur Heald Obituary

Arthur "Bud" Shands Heald

Arthur "Bud" Shands Heald, 90, of Lynchburg, passed away Monday, Sept. 6, 2010, at his residence.

Born Nov. 28, 1919, in Swampscott, Mass., he was a son of the late Wistar Morris Heald Sr. and Lois Shads Taylor. Bud was a lifelong member of St. John's Episcopal Church, where he was baptized, married, a member of the Vestry and teaching Sunday school. Bud served in the United States Army, serving during World War II. He was stationed for 18 months in England, France, Belgium and Germany with the 195th QM Gasoline Co. His college education was cut short by the draft so his loyalty for his Alma-Ata, Virginia Episcopal School always remained firm. He was honored by the school in October 2003 for his gifts to the Loyalty Fund and his years as the representative for the class of 1939 with a "Bud Heald" day. Bud spent his working career as a corrugated box engineer and salesman. He worked for Carolina Container, Robert Gair Corporation and retired after 18 years with J&J Southeast Container Company in Martinsville. The Heald's have always been "Sport Nuts," and Bud was no exception. He lettered in four sports while at VES. He made the football team as a walk-on a UVA as a freshman. He was a intramural champion in boxing. As the years went by, fishing gave way to tennis and then golf. In his later years, participating in sports gave way to watching all sports on TV.

He was also preceded in death by his wife, Ann Fitzgerald Heald; one brother and sister-in-law, Wistar M. Heald and his wife, Emily Hoskins Heald; and one daughter, Ann Garland Heald.

He is survived by his son, Robert "Bobby" Shands Heal,d and his wife, Dale J. Heald, of Holly Springs, N.C.; one nephew, Wistar M. Heald Jr., of Apex, N.C.; two granddaughters, Macon Ashley Heald, of Seattle, Wash., and Shannon Heald Poteete, of Chapel Hill, N.C.; and two great-grandchildren.

A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday, Sept. 9, 2010, at St. John's Episcopal Church, with the Rev. Diane E. Vie officiating. Burial will be private.

Bobby and family, I just heard the news of your Dad's death and wanted to let you know how deeply sorry I am for your loss. What a great guy! I remember many fun times with Garland at your house and your Dad was always so funny and nice to all of us. He will surely be missed by all who knew him.

To Bobby and Family, Mr. Heald was a legend in this town, a true Gentleman. His wife Ann might have been the best Tennis player in the bunch, she ran the Junior C.V.I.T.T for years. To see Bud and Ann Heald as
all of Lynchburg was rooting for Bobby
Heald in all of those Senior C.V.I.T.T.'s, the Pride, is something I
will never forget! The Heald Basketball Court, with lights, in the back yard, long after Bobby left, but still there for Generations! Lynchburg
loved the Healds' and all they stood for, Bud and Ann Heald will be sorely
missed, and are now back together again. To Bobby Heald, my favorite Tennis Player of all time, I am sad for you. Sincerely, Brad Rainey

A finer man could not be found. Not only did I have the pleasure of working with him in a business capacity, but his generosity in letting us neighborhood boys play basketball well into our late 30's (and late into the night as well) was greatly appreciated. The city has lost a true icon.
