William Mosby Obituary

William Edward Mosby Sr.

"And he gave some apostles; and some, prophets; and some, evangelists; and some, pastors and teachers; for the perfecting of the saints, for the work of the ministry, for the edifying of the body of Christ." Eph. 4: 11, 12

Superintendent William Edward Mosby Sr., 80, of Brookneal, passed away Wednesday, Sept. 29, 2010, at Lynchburg General Hospital. He was born March 11, 1930, to the late James Mosby and Tamar Johnson Mosby.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his brothers, Bernard, James and Jesse, and his sisters, Victoria and Sally.

"O Lord, truly I am thy servant; I am thy servant, and the son of thine handmaid: thou hast loosed my bonds." Ps. 116:16 Supt. Mosby served the Lord in deeds and actions until his last days. He was the charismatic Pastor of Burning Bush Church of God in Christ in Brookneal for 31 years and was the Superintendent of the Lynchburg District, Second Diocese of Virginia. He was also the pastor of Brown's Memorial Church of God in Christ in Nathalie from 1979 to 1987. The magnitude of his service to the Lord was demonstrated in the many leadership positions he held in the church. An abbreviated list of his service is as follows: Administrative Assistant to the Chairman of the National Pastors and Elders Council; Member, Executive Staff of the General Assembly of the Church of God in Christ International; Member, the National Ways and Means Committee, Church of God in Christ; Fifth Administrative Assistant to the Jurisdictional Bishop, Second Diocese of Virginia; Treasurer, Black National Religious Broadcaster; and State Treasurer of Second Diocese of Virginia, Church of God in Christ. He served faithfully in all these positions.

Supt. Mosby remained an active member of the Brookneal community through his membership in the local chapter of the Lion's Club and the American Legion. Also, he founded and directed the local USDA Food Distribution Center and was the District Director of Rural and Urban Housing Development. In these capacities, Supt. Mosby continued his service by providing local community members with opportunities for home ownership and ensuring that Brookneal families did not have empty dinner tables.

In his spare time, Supt. Mosby enjoyed fishing with his family and gardening. He often showcased his musical talents both singing and organ playing in church among his saints and at home surrounded by family.

"The Lord shall increase you more and more, you and your children." Psalm 115:14 In addition to his wife of 56 years Marie Mosby, Supt. Mosby has four children to cherish his memory: his sons, William Jr. (Valerie) and Kevin (Denise); his daughters, Faye Norris (John) and Chrystal Hill (Larry); 12 grandchildren, Elisa Norris, John Norris (Kendra), Tamisha Norris, Michael Mosby (Latoya), Candace Williams (John), Kimberly Burke (Briarsen), Dwan Hill, Marcus Hill, Douglas Mosby, Andreis Norris, Kevin Mosby Jr. and Shakayla Mosby; four great-grandchildren, DeMarcus Mosby, Isaiah Mosby, Michaela Mosby and Braylynn Burke; three brothers, John, Matthew and Wilson; three sisters, Martha, Elizabeth and Carrie; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives and friends.

A homegoing service will be held at noon Monday, Oct. 4, 2010, at Crossroad Baptist Church, 191 Crossroads Lane, Evington, with interment in the Burning Bush Church of God in Christ Cemetery in Naruna. A visitation for family and friends will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 3, 2010, at Burning Bush Church of God in Christ in Brookneal with viewing beginning at 4 p.m. at the church.
