Alvin Leroy Nichols Jr., 83, of Bedford, passed away Tuesday, Oct. 26, 2010, at Centra Lynchburg General Hospital. He was born Sunday, Feb. 13, 1927, in Bedford County, a son of the late Alvin Leroy Nichols Sr. and Jennie Lou Roberts Nichols. He was also preceded in death by four brothers, Basil Nichols, Travis Nichols, Ray B. Nichols and Troy Lee Nichols, and three sisters, Agnes Guthrie, Inez Baber and Lorene Dare Johnson. He was retired from the U.S. Air Force and Bedford County Public Schools and was a member of Main Street United Methodist Church.

Surviving is his wife, Anna Lashutka Nichols; and four sisters, Isabelle N. Hughes, of Bedford, Katherine Wood, of Huddleston, Mary Ann Wade, of Hampton; and Barbara Jane Padgett, of Roanoke.

The family requests no flowers and are asking those who wish to make memorials to consider American Heart Association, P.O. Box 5216, Glen Allen, VA 23058, or the Alzheimer's Association, 1022 Commerce St., Lynchburg, VA 24504.

Funeral services, with military honors by American Legion Post # 16, will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 30, 2010, at the graveside at Bethesda United Methodist Church Cemetery, with the Rev. Les Trail and the Rev. Tammy Franklin officiating.
