Doris Toms Obituary

Doris Marion Karnes Toms

Doris Marion Karnes Toms, 84, of Madison Heights, and formally of Bedford, died Sunday, Nov. 7, 2010, at Bedford Memorial Hospital. Born in Bedford County on Aug. 29, 1926, a daughter of the late Mondis Merron Karnes and Lillian Ruth Ayers Karnes. In addition to her parents, Doris was preceded in death by her first husband, Raleigh Wilson Wright, and her second husband, John Vernon Toms; and two sisters, Elizabeth Hensley, Frances Lawhorn.

Doris is survived by 12 children, Ruth Crawford and her husband, Carl, of Madison Heights, Fern Farrell and her husband, Charles, of Madison Heights, Crystal Bell and her friend, Charles Elkins, of Bedford, George Wright and his friend, Lisa Willis, of Lynchburg, William Wright and wife, Karen, of Bedford, Doug Wright and his wife, Cheryl, Jean Tipton and her husband, Ray, Betty Heck, Wayne Wright, John Vernon Toms Jr., James Edward Toms and his wife, Katie, and Betty Stanley and her husband, Donnie; 32 grandchildren; 52 great-grandchildren; three great-great-grandchildren; one brother, David Mondis Karnes, of Evington; one sister, Helen Karnes Taylor, of White Sulfur Springs, W.Va.; a special niece, Janet Karnes Wright, of Sweet Springs, W.Va.; a very special friend, Sarah Cobb, of Oakwood Manor; also numerous nieces, nephews and special friends.

Memorial contributions may be made to The Bedford Life Saving Crew, P.O. Box 161, Bedford, VA 24523.

A celebration of Doris's life will be conducted at 1 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 11, 2010, at Tharp Funeral Chapel with Pastor Ray T. Lyons and the Rev. Wayne Hudson officiating. Burial will follow in Peaks Community Cementery. The family will receive friends from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 10, 2010, at Tharp Funeral Home & Crematory, Bedford.
