David "Poke" Lee Harris

David "Poke" Lee Harris (Sept. 13, 1940 Nov. 19, 2010) was born and raised in Lynchburg, a son of the late Rev. James Arthur Harris and Rosa Crews Harris. He was a graduate of Dunbar High School. David was preceded in death by siblings, Othelia Harris, James Arthur

Harris Jr., Delma Harris Gaines and Charles Harris; grandchild, Christopher Terrel Harris; and niece, Kimberly Harris. He was baptized at an early age at White Rock Baptist Church. He served in the United States Air Force for 20 years before receiving an honorable discharge on

Jan. 31, 1978.

Left to cherish his memories are his children, Gevetta Latrice Harris, of Lynchburg, Sheryl Lavonne Harris, of El Paso, Texas, Kimberly Renaye Harris-Moore, of Bluefield, W.Va., Benita Rochelle Harris-Megginson, of Lynchburg, and Tina Marie Harris, of Austin, Texas; stepchildren, Antione Marcel Lane and Brian Demetrice Page, both of Austin, Texas, and Sallie Leeanne King, of Lynchburg; grandchildren, Joel Lamont Taylor and George Evans Taylor, both of Lynchburg, David Michael Ellis, of El Paso, Texas, Kiara Shante Moore, of St. Albans, W.Va., Garry Dexter Moore Jr., of Bluefield, W.Va., Lastacia Rochelle Davis, of Lynchburg, Joshua Romone Davis, of Raleigh, N.C., Korrey Lee Davis and Christopher Amon Megginson, both of Lynchburg, and Valacy Monay Harris, John Anthony Overton, and Jada Monique Overton, all of Austin, Texas; step- grandchildren, Bryce Cuactemoc Tello and Shelby Lauryne Page, both of Austin, Texas, Caleb Daniel King and Jeremy Rashov King, both of Lynchburg; great- grandchildren, Za-miya Marie Taylor and Sydney Marie Dowell, both of Lynchburg; brother, Ralph Harris, of Lynchburg; nieces, Rosa Mae Hewitt Brown, of Marlboro, Md., Sandra Gaines, of Baltimore, Md., Angela Harris, and Sherri Harris, both of Durham, N.C., and Jaclyn Harris, of Washington, D.C.; nephews, Ernest "Woosie" Gaines, of Baltimore, Md., Charles "Pookie" Edward Harris Jr., of Milpitas, Calif., Harvey "Steven" Harris, of Dayton, Ohio, O'Brian M. Harris, of College Park, Ga., Jamerson "Jamie" Lynn Harris, of Columbus, Ohio, and Michael Webster, of Saginaw, Mich.; former spouses, Elizabeth "Anne" Harris Wynn, of Lynchburg, and Velma Harris Page, of Austin, Texas; and a host of other relatives and friends.

The family would like to give special recognition and appreciation to all those at the Veterans Administration, Adult Center of Central Virginia, Lynchburg General Hospital, Generations Home Medical, Centra Hospice and Davis-Turner Funeral Home, who provided David with the best services during his last days. Finally, to all of you who came to celebrate David's home-going, we bid you know that "earth has no sorrow that heaven cannot heal."

A funeral service will be held 11 a.m. Tuesday,

Nov. 23, 2010, at Davis-Turner Funeral Service, with the Rev. Gary Moore officiating. The interment will be at a later date. The family will receive friends at the residence of Gevetta Harris.
