Katherine Scaggs Young Martin

Katherine Scaggs Young Martin departed this life Saturday, Feb. 12, 2011. She was born in Botetourt County on May 27, 1925, to the late Lydia Keith Scaggs and Maynard Scaggs.

Katherine is survived by a daughter, Peggy-Stuart Young Smith; a son, Mark M. Young (Patricia); a stepdaughter, Margaret M. O'Bryant (Fred); a grandson, Eric S. Smith (Mariko); a step-granddaughter, Kimberly W. Wilkerson (Michael); and two step-great-grandchildren, Haley and Ian Wilkerson. She is also survived by four brothers, Lewis Scaggs, Curtis Scaggs (Nadine), Harvey Scaggs (Betty) and Robert Scaggs; and two sisters, Darlene S. Painter (Jack) and Betty S. Moran; and nieces and nephews.

Katherine was predeceased by her first husband, Stuart S. Young. They owned and operated the Lendy's restaurants in Lynchburg until Stuart's death in 1969.

While he lived, she and her second husband,

A. Raymond (Pepper) Martin, lived in Rocky Mount. Katherine and Raymond enjoyed many years of happy living and truly enjoyed their domestic and international travels. In 2006, Katherine and her daughter, Peggy, formerly of Midlothian, relocated to Lynchburg.

She was also predeceased by a stepson, A. Raymond Martin Jr.; a sister, Geneva S. Belcher; and a step-granddaughter, Cynthia Willard.

Family and friends are invited to gather and remember Katherine at

6 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 15, 2011, at the Social Center of Heritage at Wyndhurst, 200 Paulette Circle, Lynchburg. A graveside service will be conducted at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, Feb. 16, 2011, at High Street Cemetery, Rocky Mount. The family requests that any remembrances be made to either the American Cancer Society or the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Research.
