Larry Douglas Echols
Larry Douglas Echols, 62, of Fincastle, went to be with the Lord on Friday, Oct. 1, 2010. "The battle is over, the victory is mine." Born June 14, 1948, he was preceded in death by his mother, Virginia F. Echols; father, Robert D. Echols; and father-in-law, Earnest C. McClung.
He leaves behind his wife of 40 years, Bonnie McClung Echols. He was a devoted father to his children, Doug Echols and wife, Christy, of Chester, and Tammy Ogle and husband, Tom, of Fincastle; and devoted grandfather to his adoring grandchildren, Brandon and Lauren Ogle and Kayla and Alyssa Echols. He is also survived by his sister, Carol E. Mullins; sisters and brothers-in-law, Diane and Lee Shilling, Ricky and Kathy McClung and Jerry McClung; mother-in-law, Janie N. McClung; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Larry was employed by Bankers Life and Casualty Insurance Company, achieving the Presidents Honor Circle for four years. He was currently employed by Mass Mutual. Larry served faithfully at Zion Hill Baptist Church as a trustee, treasurer, Sunday school teacher and served 35 years as a Deacon. Larry fought a courageous eight-year battle with colon cancer and became a hero to his family. On his behalf, the family would like to thank Dr. William Fintel and his staff, especially to nurses who cared for him with compassion. Thanks to Gentle Shepard Hospice, especially to nurse Macky, who was our angel from God. Funeral services were held at 1 p.m. Monday, Oct. 4, 2010, at Zion Baptist Church in Fincastle, with the Rev. David Hirschman officiating. Interment will follow in the church cemetery. The family received friends and loved ones from 2 to 4 p.m. and from 6 to 8 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 3, 2010, at the Radar Funeral Home in Daleville.
