Rick Lange
Erik "Rick" Gene Lange, 64, died Monday, Nov. 29, 2010, at his home in Laguna Woods, Calif., from complications of cancer.
Rick was born Nov. 3, 1946, in Van Nuys, Calif., the only child of the late Carl Lange and Alberta Lange Kennedy. He was married to Irene (Voss) Lange in Rockton, Ill., on Aug. 10, 1968.
Rick served in the U.S. Navy, where he was awarded the National Defense Medal, Vietnam Service Medal, Vietnam Campaign Medal, Meritorious Unit Commendation, and received an honorable discharge. After his military service, Rick attended Liberty University where he earned a degree in history. His graduate studies included a master's degree in Missions from Grace Theological Seminary and a Doctor of Philosophy from Oxford Graduate School.
Rick was an ordained minister and, along with his wife, Irene, spent most of his adult life making a difference in some of the least advantaged areas of the world, including Haiti, the Red Sea Hills in Sudan, and the Turkana and Wajir districts of Kenya. In addition to sharing the good news of God's love, they provided medical care and relief to victims of famine and drought, as well as education, clean water and community development projects designed to promote long-term self-sufficiency.
Rick was a skilled and engaging teacher and served on the faculties of Liberty University and Nairobi International Graduate School of Theology. Rick also served on the Board of Regents of Oxford Graduate School. He was the director of inter-cultural training, and a founding member of the Board of Directors of One Another Ministries.
Rick is survived by his wife, Irene, his mother, Alberta, and stepfather, Ralph Kennedy. He is also survived by a host of friends around the world, who were always uplifted by his humor, guided by his insight, and challenged by his dedication.
A memorial service is planned for 3 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 11, 2010, at Blue Ridge Community Church, 2361 New London Road, Forest. (434) 525-7481.
