Thelma Roark Dalton
Thelma Roark Dalton, 98.9, of 1213 Main Street, Altavista, died Wednesday, Jan. 03, 2007. She was the wife of the late Ernest W. Dalton for 58 years.
Born March 23, 1908, in Altavista, she was a daughter of the late James Braxton Roark and Mary Jacobs Roark. She was a member of New Prospect Baptist Church, where she was active in the Joy Sunday School Class and the Ann Dwyer Circle. Thelma served as treasurer of Altavista Friendship Club and enjoyed playing cards at the Lynch Station Senior Citizen's Club.
She was a feisty "young lady" who lived her life joyfully and with great expectations. She was devoted to Jesus Christ, her loving family and her caring church friends. She said the best part of her life was that God did not have her sit through it in a rocking chair. Thelma always advised everyone to "keep on dancing" and "you don't have to be good, just careful." She was a retiree of the Altavista Label Weave.
She is survived by two daughters, Nancy D. Dunnavant, of Charlotte Court House, and Mary F. Ahlborn and her husband, John, of Springfield, Ohio; four grandchildren, Patti Thornton and her husband, Jerry, of Mechanicsville, Steven Dunnavant and his wife, Cindy, of Orlando, Fla., Rod Jacobs and his wife, Carmen, of Woodbridge, and Micah Jacobs, of Holland, Ohio; four great-grandchildren, Melissa and Michelle Thornton, Harrison Jacobs and Carrie Knight; her husband, Sam and special friends, Amos Walker and Lucy and Carroll Rigney.
A funeral service will be conducted 11 a.m. Friday, Jan. 5, 2007, at New Prospect Baptist Church, by the Rev. Brady Willis and the Rev. Bob Reese, with interment to follow in the church cemetery.
The family will receive friends 7 to 8:30 p.m. today, at Finch & Finch Inc. Funeral and Cremation Service in Altavista. At other times the family will be at the residence.
In lieu of flowers the family would suggest a memorial to the building fund of New Prospect Baptist Church, P. O. Box 547, Hurt, VA 24563.
