Paul Kline Obituary

Published by Potomac News and Manassas Journal Messenger on Apr. 14, 2006.
Paul Emerson Kline, age 84, died on April 13, 2006, at Blue Ridge Christian Home in Bealeton. Mr. Kline was born on Oct. 1, 1921, in Manassas to the late John Miller and Hattie (nee Kane) Kline. Paul Kline was a lifelong resident and businessman of Northern Virginia with a passion for people, church, family and ice cream. Paul was a member of the Manassas Church of the Brethren and volunteered for Heifer International as one of the first "seagoing cowboys," delivering livestock to impoverished areas of China in the aftermath of World War II. Raised on a dairy farm his love for ice cream began early. He made ice cream for Melvern Dairy of Washington, D.C. He later delivered milk to homes throughout Northern Virginia for Birmingham Dairy, Alexandria Dairy and Shenandoah's Pride. He and his wife June opened Kline's Freeze (1965) and Kline's Drive-In (1969) in Manassas, where they lived and raised a family of seven children. When he wasn't serving ice cream, he enjoyed farming, gardening, family gatherings and singing. He was an active member of the Bull Run Troubadours Barbershop Chorus for many years and often shared joy and laughter through song. Mr. Kline is predeceased by his parents; five brothers, Wilmer, Alvin, Leslie, Claron, and John Kline and two sisters, Lola Cardwell and Eleanor Secord. He is survived by his wife, June Sadd Kline of Catlett; seven children and their spouses, Jeanette (Doug) Shonk of Goldvein, Helen (Burton) Wolf of West Milton, Ohio, Wayne (Loretta) Kline of Manassas, Bonnie (Melvin) Cheshire of Bristow, Lorraine (James) Croushorn of Nokesville, Donna (Harold) House of Nokesville, and Lynn (Joan) Kline of Nokesville; two brothers, Everett Kline of Manassas, and Orrin Kline of Bridgewater; 18 grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; many extended family members and the loving caretakers at Blue Ridge Christian Home. Visitation will be held on Monday, April 17, from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. at Manassas Church of the Brethren, 10047 Nokesville Road, Manassas. Funeral services will take place at the church on Tuesday, April 18, at 11 a.m. with Pastor Jeffrey Carter officiating. Interment will follow at Cannon Branch Cemetery in Manassas. A memorial contribution may be made in the form of a donation to Heifer International, 1015 Louisiana St., Little Rock, AR 72202 or Blue Ridge Christian Home, 7034 Catlett Road, Bealeton, VA 22712. Mrs Kline and each member of your family,

We are saddened by the passing of your beloved Paul. I have fond memories of eating breakfast at Kline's Drive-In with my parents, Edward and Gerry Ashley. I still stop in occasionally for ice cream and a chat with Glenn. My husband and I often enjoy ice cream cones at Kline's Freeze. May all the memories you hold dear help comfort you today and in the days ahead.

I was sad to hear of Mr. Kline's passing. I worked for him at Tastee Freeze on Centerville Road close to Manassas Park while I was in high school in the late 60's. I always thought he was such a nice man and a pleasure to be around. I thank him for giving me the pleasure and experience of working at Tastee Freeze. I really enjoyed it. I hope the 2 restaurants continue to stay open as the food and the ice cream are delicious. I take my children there still, one of which is 13 and the other 20. He will be greatly missed. God Bless his family.

I mainly knew your dad through your stories of him, but I know he was a hard worker who loved his family and loved the church. I hope those stories sustain you in the days ahead.

My condolences to the Kline family. I last enjoyed Klines Drive In in 1976, at which time I left Manassas, for IBM Austin, Tx. I was just back in Manassas this past week, and saw Kline's Freeze still open. It truly brought on a smile, for Manassas had really changed, but there was 1 landmark that is still there.

Sincerely,

Steve Vaughan
